Hi everyone,

This is my first time on this site so I hope my question is appropriate. I have acquired two large glass vases and want to put something in them other than flowers! They are very big, any suggestions? I have bought 200 multicoloured glass pebbles, but they don't even fill one of them half way, so want ideas on what I could put in the rest of the vase/ what I can put in the other? Thanks :)
P.s (the glass vases are to go in the living room as decoration)

If you put a layer of stones on the bottom and up the edge a bit, then fill the centre with styrofoam, or crumpled paper as you go - keeping a thing stone layer on the outside, then on the top - that should work and it'll be lighter. You can also decopage them, but I'd do it from the inside - much nicer look with glass. They can be stained with a glass paint. You could make lamps out of them - nothing is needed to fill them that way and they'll likely make beautiful lamps. I can't think of anything else right now, but I'm sure that others will come up with ideas. HTHs :-)

This is going to be interesting to see the end result. Looking forward to it. What about colored water or dried twigs and branches or dried seed pods?

Maybe you could change what you put in them with the seasons? Fall - the dried twigs and some things as Belle has suggested, Christmas - lots of colored ball ornaments and some glitz? I've even put a string of white Christmas lights in mine and if you get the ones with the clear or white cords on them, it doesn't really show - actually I keep the lights in mine year round sometimes......

As Belle says, it may be seasonal - long stems of flowers in the summer,; in the fall, fragmites (those tall puffy things you see on the highways) & cattails always look good; or you could try some peacock feathers from a place that sells home decor stuff; spring there are all kinds of flowering branches - forsythia, pussy willows, flowering trees. Of course, most of this stuff is available from stores in artificial, non-shedding versions. I will try to think of something besides greenery. They look pretty - you will have fun finding things to put in them.

You can also get photo stems - I am not sure what they are really called - but they are like frames on flower like stems. Instead of flowers you could have photos.
A hundred years from now it will not matter what my bank account was,the sort of house I lived in, or the kind of car I drove, but the world may be different because I was important in the life of a child....

Welcome, welcome. :) I really love ornament balls, I change the colors with the season or holiday in a large vase (also use those small strings of lights with batteries). I have a huge collection of fall colored balls in various sizes - don't know how that happened! I love the photo stem idea. Also use shells in June. It does help to add filler as suggested. Have fun! Welcome!

I once traveled to the Midwest for a seminar, in the fall. The vases in the hotel were filled with candy corn to hold the dried flowers in place! Using filler would save you from having to buy a hundred pounds of candy corn. ;)

Great ideas ladies! I like the Christmas balls with lights. You can also get decorative balls (not hanging ornaments) at places like Pier 1 that are light weight. They come in different sizes and patterns.

I have the same tall glasses that a friend gave me. I put a colored sand at the bottom and colorful pebbles bon the half way up.

Lots of great idea here. I have Gum nuts and seed pods in mine but shells would also be nice. Wrapped chocolates maybe. I have a friend who puts all her costume jewellery in hers. There are endless possibilities. Hope you fund something that suits you. Kay

hard candies would be fun at Christmas too - they are so colorful & you wouldn't have to store them in the off season - you'd be lucky if they remained in there till New Year! ;)

I recently used different kinds of dried beans for one of my interior design clients...vary the layer depth & angle some layers. Don't fill all the way - you need some "white space" at the top. Finish by tying a raffia bow around the neck of the vase.
Lots of great ideas posted here - would be interested to see what you come up with!
