Today I signed up for a membership with South Beach Diet Online, so I can access their message board, recipes, tips, and support.

And you know how I was bummed that I gained 2 pounds this past week?

Well, one of the members told me this...

"The average loss in Phase1 is usually around 10% of the amount of weight you are trying to lose."

Since I only need to lose 20 pounds to get to my goal, 10% would be 2 pounds. I had a 3 pound weight loss in Phase 1, which means I am average :) So I don't have to be as frustrated about it. She also said that it might be water weight as my body tries to adjust. She said that I need to just stick with the plan. I should see about losses of 1/2 to 1 pound a week as I continue with Phase 2. Yay!

Awesome!! I'm guessing that advice/info alone makes the membership worth every penny (and then some:)
*high five*

What kinds of exercises are included in ChaLEAN Extreme? Is it squats/lunges and stuff like Jillian/Bob do in their videos? Is it weights? Is it stuff like Turbo? And about how long are the video segments?

It's a 5 day a week program using weights or resistance bands. 2 of the days are more cardio, 3 are strength training. There is also a 2 level ab workout which I really like. 1 cardio day is burn intervals (my fav workout) and the other is "Burn it Off", more of a fat-blasting workout. Overall I have been extremely pleased with ChaLean Extreme. You could do it Tiza, for sure! One of the women in each video works out with lighter weights, and she always has someone using the resistance bands as well. Most of the videos are around 35 minutes, and the burn intervals is the longest at 45 minutes. Also, there's not a whole lot of coordination involved...well, at least no fast moves. Chalene is all about slow and steady for the weight-lifting, and the faster cardio moves are not difficult to master. There's no funking twisting and weird stuff like Jillian throws in sometimes;)

The same member also warns that "Most people see no loss for a week or two when starting Phase 2."

So I'll be stuck at this weight until October lol

WOO HOO!! You jumping to week 5 Angie? Seems like you are ready to actually do that week if you are running 8 minutes straight already. It took me awhile to get there and I still feel like quitting after the first 5 minutes. LOL! Or are you just running yourself?

You talking about a design zone? I've been missing my design zone for about 3 weeks now... I'd really like to find it again.

Brandy: Go go go! :)

A nice bowl of chili to all "sickies" and anyone else who would like a bowl. I'm not sure that pesto pasta and chili really go together, lol, but that's what we had for dinner:) I ended up making about 6 batches of pesto (can't count 'em straight b/c depending on how much basil goes in the blender, some batches are way bigger than others, lol.)

That's a lot of pesto!! Use it on pizza in place of tomato sauce :)

Kind of a mix...lol Today I didn't feel like running at all, so I just took my ipod down to do the elliptical. But I got on and walked a few minutes, then started jogging until I hit 10 1/2 min (walked the first 2) then finished up the rest walking 1 min jogging 1 1/2 min. So I think this weekend i'll run/walk a bit here and there and then start on week 5 Monday.

Forgot to update yesterday - I went walking Thursday 9/15. It was kinda low-key. After a few days of high intensity I needed a little slower pace. Today I need to pick it back up and finish the week strong. So far I'm 4 for 4 for this round. YAY!!

Oh yeah, we've had it that way before too! My kids prefer it on pasta though. My oldest son gets a little perturbed in the spring when I tell him we're out of pesto and will have to wait for late June again for more. The store bought stuff just isn't the same, and is darned expensive.

I'm done for Friday. P90X arrived and I tried the Cardio X workout since I needed something fairly short (ha, it's 45 minutes) and didn't want to start anything too strenuous when I haven't even had a chance to look past a few pages in the guide book. The book said the Cardio X was either "in addition to your standard P90X workload or as a substitute if your body needs a break." I only had time for the first 30 minutes of it so I'm not sure how it ends yet. lol

Just out of curiosity, what size weights are you using to get your boy muscles?

I have a set called Power Blocks, nested weights from 6-24 pounds. They are very well constructed and I think better thought of in general than the Select Techs from Bowflex. I looked at a bunch of reviews online and talked to a few weight lifters in my semi-local area stores. I really need heavier weights for squats though, probably in the neighborhood of 30-35 pounds. That heavier set that goes up to 50 pounds is well over $300 though, and I'm not going to splurge for it anytime soon.

Speaking of boy muscles, P90X has a lot of pull-ups and I need to splurge for the chin-up bar that can fit on a doorway. So I think I'll stick with ChaLean's arm workouts until I order that in a week or so.

oh my...not sure if I will be able to move my arms tomorrow. Tonight was alot of shoulder work, and i'm feeling it already.

I ended up, well my husband ended up, getting the golds gym weights. (I had started looking..then put him on the job of picking them out) They go from 5-25lb. I kind of wish I had gotten ones that went in 3lb increments, but I have 2 and 3lb hand weights, so tonight on a few exercises I used 2 weights per hand when 5lb was too light and 10lbs was too heavy. And since you're only doing 12 reps per exercise it works really well and didn't seem to odd.

I had thought about getting a set up to 50lbs. But after talking to a few people that have done both ChaLEAN and P90X they said that really there's only a few exercises that they have used that 25-30lb range..and I have a 30lb set of free weights I stuck with that. Hopefully I won't be regretting it later.

A friend of mine let me borrow P90X the other day to see what it was like. I'm telling you, I turned it on..watched a bit then put it up. That man scares me..he's the boy version of Jillian. LOL I do really think I need to go all the way through ChaLEAN before I even think about it, that and Turbo Fire..i'm really wanting that now.

I love to hear about your results & opinions on ChaLean, TurboFire, etc. Cheri, P90X really does get easier, I promise! When I started back up, I hadn't been exercising for months. I put in CardioX and did I think half of it before turning it off, dizzy & lying in a puddle of sweat on the floor. Just over 5 weeks later, I'm wearing ankle weights in Kenpo. I did 911 push ups in about 2.5 hours for a challenge on 9-11 (511 on my toes, 400 on my knees). I can do 3 unassisted pull ups (then the rest using a chair, lol.) How many do you think I could do when I started? Maybe -3..lol. I'm not trying to brag about what I can do, only show you that you start at the bottom and things really improve. You start slow and do what you can. "Do your best and forget the rest" is what Tony says. Results come quickly if you really push yourself and try your hardest. Also, to all you wondering about weights, I do almost everything with resistance bands. I also have 2 sets of 3 lb weights that I use for hard stuff like side flys and everything where he says "use a LIGHT weight for this one!" usually means high reps). Sometimes I hold two weights in each hand. I only bought a chin-up bar a week ago, it definitely changed the game. Also I definitely think you can get away with less than 50 lbs. Do higher reps - 12-16. I usually do 20 since I don't have heavier weights. I would love a set of those power blocks but the bands will work for now. I think the most I do with bands right now would equal about 35 lbs.

Angie, you are right to stick your program out to the end. They are tailored to get you the most results at the end. If you jump around from one to the next you will never see the intended result of each one (I've hopped around a lot. This is my first time following one through to the end.)

Jen (Angie, Gayle and all you other runners), I despise running and I am actually so jealous that you are running! I want to be a runner but I always hate it. But then sometimes I do it and start liking it. Does that make sense? Lol. SO GOOD that you are enjoying it and have found your groove!

Tiza, the messageboard sounds like a great tool & resource!

You guys are inspiring! Everyone is getting it done! I did todays workout earlier, 1 hour of Core synergistics (arg, it's a hard one!) Keep it up ladies, we are getting healthier every day!

Angie, I know what you mean about Tony. Remember I asked Julie M. about him a month or so back? He annoyed me in the advertisements, and I think he will annoy me in the videos. But Jillian annoys me and I still like her workouts (usually, lol, except when I hate them) ;) The funny thing is, my 8 year old likes Chalene best. He says Jillian is always trying to "act cool." I told him Chalene doesn't have to ACT cool; she IS cool. LOL. Maybe that's what I don't like about Tony...he's always acting cool.

Tony Horton does P90X, right? I have his 10-Minute Trainer...and even those are hard for me. (of course, I haven't tried those in over a year) But he spends most of that time just talking and the tiny exercise chic does all the moves ;)

Once I get bored with TurboJam, I'm not sure if I'll get TurboFire or ChaLean Extreme. I can't afford both.

Tonight I walked to the grocery store for my exercise - 10 minutes there, 15 minutes walking around the store, and then 10 minutes home (carrying my groceries).

And oooooooh tonight I had some frozen strawberries with my ricotta cheese. MY first real fruit in almost 3 weeks. It tasted heavenly. But I have to be careful. For this first week (or two) on Phase2, I have to limit myself to 1 grain/starch and 1 fruit per day. That will be tricky, because I love grains, starches, and fruits.

9/16 - Got 20 mins of a dance cardio video from Netflix. I got a great workout, but got totally lost. So we stopped the video and turned on our Pilates. 10 min ab workout and another 10 min total body workout. My abs and shoulders hurt, in a good way. I love that Pilates video.

You are already steps ahead of me! Of course, you've been exercising before you started, duh *slaps forehead. I can't wait to hear how you like the workouts and your progress. You were doing ChaLEAN before, right? I want to try that one. I was thinking of getting my mom started on it too. She really likes Hip Hop Abs and Brazil Butt Lift but I think she needs some resistance training. She said she'd do P90X with me but I can tell she's scared!!

Tiza, Tony used to annoy me too. It seems like he's belittling all the people on the DVDs. But he really, REALLY grew on me. Now I laugh at all his jokes even though I've heard them so many times. *"Like a pterodactyl backing out of trouble. CAW!! CAW!!" He somehow became my favorite. Isn't it funny how after doing a workout several times you kind of feel like you know the people in it?

9/16 - Got 20 mins of a dance cardio video from Netflix. I got a great workout, but got totally lost. So we stopped the video and turned on our Pilates. 10 min ab workout and another 10 min total body workout. My abs and shoulders hurt, in a good way. I love that Pilates video.

I forgot about those Netflix workout vids! My SIL told me about them. I'm going to have to try those. Do you recommend any in particular?

9/16/11 Friday, 20 mins on the elliptical with stretching before and afterward.

Tiza, I bet all the recipe ideas will be worth the South Beach membership alone, but it sounds like you're getting good feedback too. :)

wtg Angie! Keep running, it will get easier! Just imagine Conda's long horn cow behind you and I'm sure that will help. ;)

Cheri, I wonder if you could make pesto chilli and start a new trend. ;)

Jen, with me and my hubby it's the other way around. He'd be the one running and I'd be the one with the camera. In fact he usually wants to run when I have the camera. lol He's gotten better the longer we've been married about letting me take his picture, but at first he hated it!

Sheesh, you all will totally have boy muscles with all that weight lifting!

Sheri I love Kenpo! I haven't done it for years, but I loved it! I can't believe you did 911 push ups. Holy Moly!

Pat wtg on the weight loss! Every pound counts!

I was bad tonight. I had rootbeer with Hawaiian pizza and gave into the burnt almond fudge brownie Sunday. :wobbly-eyes: But it was fun!

LOL, yep, I have been doing ChaLean Extreme, Jillian's 30 Day Shred, and Jillian's 6 Week 6 Pack since January. I love the name of the Brazil Butt Lift one...makes me giggle each time I see an ad for it:) And I'll definitely keep you in the loop with how I like the workouts. Including whether Tony grows on me...I hope so, or it could be a LOoooong 90 days;) I figure if I can stick with Jillian, surely I can stick with Tony, right?

Wendee, I love your reply-type posts! I am finding it more difficult to keep up with some of the messages b/c I'm so focused on all your workouts and recording them this month. Pesto chili might not be such a bad idea - cilantro tastes delicious in chili! I think I'll give a spoonful a try...I have a little leftover pesto sauce in the frig and some leftover chili...I'll report back, lol.
LOL to your joke about your DH running when the camera comes out!
Sheri, I am amazed at the 911 pushups too...OMGoodness!
Pat: WTG! Keep up the good work!

It's official - I took tonight off. I just caught up on all the posts and am so impressed at all the videos you all are doing. I think my knees would have a heart attack if I attempted to do them! I used to do aerobics all the time, and then step aerobics, and my knees just don't bend like they used to, so I tend to stay away from the impact, jumping things. Is that what the ChaLean and Jillians are?

I'll do a work out on Sunday to make up for today. I just feel really tired tonight, and have had such a busy week at work this week I'm beat.

There's no high impact in ChaLean (or at least you can modify it the times there are). Jillian...you could modify her, but she is pretty in to high impact. My knees hurt during some of the 30 Day Shred, and my knees have NEVER hurt before.

When I worked full time, Friday night was the worst for me. I should have been euphorically happy to have the weekend off, and instead I was usually asleep at 8:30 at the latest from sheer exhaustion (mostly mental), though I got 8 hours of sleep M-Th.
