workout 1~~We started at the CC meet. I clocked 10,000 steps and almost 5 miles--about one-third of that was jogging/walking fast and add a little taking shortcuts through gorges in the woods.... MY DS placed 5th in his division of 205 runners and 30th of all 615 varsity boys. Big Day! And their team placed 2nd of 33 teams in their division.
workout 2~From there we drove 3 hours to the band competition. I added another 5,000 steps and a little over 2 miles going to and from the competition field and also setting up, pulling, and disassembling my beloved podium!
I wasn't going to break them up, but I just want to nap today. Yesterday started at 5:15 AM to make the 2-hr drive to the meet and ended at midnight when I got home from band (another 3 hr drive...yes, I put in 8 driving hours yesterday too.)

Jen, kids are so funny in what they say.
Ro, wtg and push through it!
Amy, glad you got home safe. It's such a scary feeling to have to drive when you're tired. I'll be the walking helped.
Cheri, I bet those cigar boxes will be awesome decorated up! How exciting about the library table too!
Kim, what a day! You're like super mom!

OOoh, I'm so jealous! I love double-hung windows. We wanted to purchase a home when we wanted one, and could only find a suitable place with casement (crank out) windows. I love our house, but hate our windows. We even tried to switch when one of the casements molded and had to be replaced, but the contractor bluntly stated they cannot switch to double hung here (legally anyway) b/c there's less room to get out if there's a fire. I'm not sure how others have double hungs; they make plenty of new homes around here with them but I guess there's some rule about not making an existing escape route smaller than it currently is.
I counted you for another workout so you have a Sunday marking as well now.

OMG the Taiko class was so much fun and so much exercise. My arms & legs are jello and my back hurts. I'd say we spent at least an hour doing "warm up" exercises. Some light stretching, followed by about 125 jumping jacks in a row (which I never could have done in my pre-shred and pre-Turbo days)..... we only did 5 jacks per person (about 21 students plus 4 troupe members). The class actually has 40 students signed up, so it could have been a lot more. And Andrew warned us that they usually do 10 jacks per person. Yikes! And that was just the beginning!!
Next, we did lots of circle exercises around the perimeter of the classroom.... walking in a circle and swinging our arms to the beat. Then walking in the circle, swinging arms, and then every 3rd step we lunged forward and reached back to touch our toes. Then we put our arms down straight in front of our bodies, fingers pointing to the floor. We then had to bring one leg up, knee pointed to the side, and try to touch our heel to our fingers (without bending forward). Then hop and bring the other heel up. And repeat this jumping from foot to foot while we moved around the circle. Then repeat this with our hands behind us, doing butt kicks. Then repeat, alternating two kicks front and two butt kicks. And then a few other exercises in this circular pattern.
Then...we did small arm circles. LOTS of arm circles. Whatever 5 counts x 25 students x 6 different variations equals out to.
Then stretching.
An hour into class and we hadn't even touched a taiko (drum) yet.
We only spent about 30 minutes actually playing taiko - mostly learning basic technique. We stand in a side lunge the whole time we play, and pulse our bodies up and down in the lunge as we swing the bachi (drumsticks). They only had 5 taiko, so we had to take turns, but even when we weren't playing, we were following the movements. Lots of arm swinging.
Then the 5 members of the actual performance troupe demonstrated a song for us. And then we went through a 20-30 minute ending stretch segment. Your typical after-workout stretches - working the arms, shoulders, back, neck, quads, hamstrings, legs, waist, etc.
And I get to repeat this every Sunday from now until Dec. 18th. Yippee.
Oh...and there is a man in the class who is a triathlete who just recently ran his first IronMan. I was impressed. But his muscles scared me.

They weren't out-of-control bodybuilder muscles. But he was very very very in shape.
And Andrew (our teacher - the co-director of the group) is super flexible. He can do full splits, bend his body completely in half, and fold in ways I've never seen. It's crazy!
I'd say I'm about in the middle of the fitness/flexibility level of the group. (The group ages range from 17 to probably 70)

Oh, and thanks to Jen Reed for the tip about Target and the chin-up bar! Scored one for $30 today that Jeff thought was nice and sturdy (even when he tried it).
If any of you P90X doers, graduates, or wannabes are interested, pmail me and I'll tell you more about the test/my results. I don't want to bore everyone with the numbers here;)
I also bought a new pair of shoes today. Mine are a couple years old, and even though I've only really used them for walking and ChaLean Extreme, I really wanted something new and cushiony. The plyometrics workout is supposed to be pretty "impacty". Sheri, do you think I need the mat they sell? I've never had knee trouble, and I certainly don't want to start now!

I forgot about those Netflix workout vids! My SIL told me about them. I'm going to have to try those. Do you recommend any in particular?
Not yet. I'm just starting to explore them. I think our Pilates video is on there. It uses a resistance band. It is 10 min Solution Slim & Sculpt Pilates.

That sounds like SO MUCH FUN Tiza!!! There is a local Taiko group here and I've considered trying out but I'm so busy right now. They are so cool to watch. That really sounds like an excellent workout! I'm glad you explained everything you did, I was curious what a practice would be like.
Cheri - I don't know if the Plyo mat is necessary but definitely pay attention to how your joints feel when you do plyo. I did it for awhile on a hardwood floor and then on carpet. I think the hardwood floor was actually easier. I got winded much faster on the carpet. You always want to make sure to land softly (like a cat.) Think: staying on your toes at all times. I bought some Vibram Five-Finger shoes because that's what my brother used for all P90X workouts and he was really happy with them. I like them. At the beginning I think I tweaked something and had a sore ankle until they strengthened. I tried using one of those hard plastic mats you put under your computer chair on the carpet but it really didn't seem to make enough difference for me to warrant all the work it took to drag it in every day! I think you should just try doing it and see if you think you will need the mat. And be very careful at first so you don't injure yourself until your body gets used to the movements. You can pm me your numbers! It sounds like I'd better do the fit test, I've never done it! Maybe tomorrow morning before I start my workout I'll take the fit test.

On Saturday (Sep 17) I got in one 20 minute walk and a couple of 5 to 10 minute walks.
After dinner tonight (Sunday) I did an hour on the exercise bike.
I am NOT a runner now, and haven't been one for over 5 years. All that running in the Army gave me arthritis in my knees. Trust me on this, a little bit of runner's high does not make up for arthritis later on.

Cheri - Thanks for the Sunday mark!! Yes, in Michigan you are required to have an egress window in each bedroom, and that is the window we installed yesterday. We have one more bedroom window to install (lower level this time) and a dormer window and then all windows will be complete! When we built (I received a hammer for Mother's Day one year) I insisted on double hungs with grids. We build a cape cod style home and I do love it!!
