Organizing Styles In Pse?

I absolutely adore using styles in PSE, but I'm afraid I've overloaded my program. It's running pretty slowly, and frankly, I have more styles loaded than I can manage. Does anyone have any ideas about organizing styles?

While I'm asking, how about fonts?

Thanks!

Hi Guys -

I don't know how helpful this will be, but this is how I do it. I know PhotoShop will load the styles directly if they are stored in its style folder. I created a separate folder (I named it PhotoShop Helpers) and I then created sub-folders for my styles, actions, brushes, custom shapes, etc. Since I also have a TON of styles I have sub-folders in the Styles folder. For example, I have a Glass Effects folder, an Inked folder, etc. You don't have to do that - I just find it easier to search by theme.

I keep only the default styles default PhotoShop styles folder - everything else moves into that PhotoShop Helpers file. Whenever I want to use a style, I do the Load Styles command and navigate to that PhotoShop Helpers file. This way, it doesn't slow PhotoShop down when I start it up because it's loading up the default styles.

For fonts, I use Font Book. I'm on a MAC, so I'm not sure if that program is available for PCs. But it lets you enable and disable fonts, so I disable everything that isn't a system file which also helps the programs launch faster. Whenever I need a font, I just enable it and then turn if off when I'm done with the project.

Like I said, I'm not sure that's the best way to organize things, so I'll also be watching to see if anyone else has some good suggestions!

I've written some information on how I organize them in http://scrapgirls.net/forum/topic/50135-organizing-styles-in-cs4/page__p__899269__hl__styles__fromsearch__1#entry899269, posts 3 & 6.

There's some other information on making categories of styles for PSE in some other posts, but I haven't had a chance to search for these. Hope this helps!

I don’t know if the later versions of PSE would be like the one I’m using (6), but I have 200 styles permanently loaded and haven’t noticed any slow-down at all. It does take a bit of time for PSE to come up, but I think that is because I made the mistake of permanently loading most of my brushes, too. When I go to Layer Styles, it brings them up immediately, and I can scroll through them with ease. Brushes, however, are another matter. In the larger categories (ones with lots of brush sets in them), PSE struggles as you scroll through the list. It may be that your brushes are what are causing your slow down—again, if your version of PSE is working like mine.

I never could get PSE6 to create master categories for Styles, so I re-name each style before I load it so that the name starts out with a ‘category’ (Example: Fabric_AFT_SSStyles_Lace6401). I may have to scroll through a large list, but at least all of one type are listed together. In case it helps, I use the following list of categories: 1Shadws (I use starting numbers for styles that I want to show up at the top of the list), Actions4 (Styles that come with Actions), BevelEtc, Chipbrd1 (my ‘1’ denotes uncolored), Chipbrd2 (colored), Distresd (anything grungy), Edging, Fabric, Glitter, Metal, Mixed (hate those styles that cover different categories), Other, Paper1 (again, the 1 denotes uncolored), Paper 2 (colored), Stitchg, Transprnt.

I use Styles all the time and would just hate not to have them instantly available and so easy to review all in one place.

I run a PC and am still using the WindowsXP operating system. My computer is 7 years old and has 2GB of memory.

thanks so much for your quick response. I probably only have maybe 15 - 20 actions and styles installed. I don't have my brushes permanently installed, so that isn't the problem. I actually thought part of my problem was my 2GM memory, but now that you said that is what you have, don't know. It just takes forever for the Editor to open, that I have been reluctant to install more styles/actions. I have several new ones that I haven't installed yet. Also, I had to uninstall the last one I installed because Editor wouldn't open at all after I installed it. Don't you love computers?????

I'm not bothered with the few minutes it takes for PSE to come up since once it's open, everything works smoothly and with adequate speed. It's worth the time for me to have all my Styles loaded. Once PSE comes up, are you having speed problems?

I don't know what the problem could have been with the last Style you added. Could there have been a random problem with the file itself? Have you tried to delete it, start over, then installing it again?

Also, you may want to wait for someone with version 9 to respond. Seems like I remember that the loading of Styles is different with that version.
