Lion

I still haven't fully adapted to Apple and it has been six months, Now we've taken on Mac Lion and PSE 10 within one week of each other. Not sure which is giving me the most trouble. I'm still trying to use my old Bridge with PSE 10 and it crashes on me periodically as it always did. I know Picasa has a good search engine. Ro showed me that at our last 'convention'. But I would have to tag everything that didn't come from SG. If it does use the tags I put into Bridge, it doesn't display them the same way and confuses me. Thank you girls for naming each Scrapgirls file so well.

I cannot turn pages in my Lion Address book. I cannot find the name of the files where items are found in my Finder. I don't know how to install my actions. Always before were they not stored with the styles and accessed in the same way? Does anyone have any good advice for me besides to give it up and get a life? LOL Does anyone have a favorite place to go on the net to find advice. I usually google everything. Sometimes get a good answer, but none to these so far.

Just upgraded to Lion a couple of days ago so can't really help out yet. Haven't found any glitches yet, but haven't had time to really explore all the ins and outs. As far as using bridge...never did like it and don't use it. It gets overwhelmed too easily with a lot of supplies. And not a huge fan of picasa either. I've started using iPhoto for supplies, but I don't think there's any way around tagging things that don't have descriptive filenames. Sorry this isn't helpful. But at least you know someone out there heard your pain. Keep hanging in there.

I've also upgraded to Lion but I can't help much yet either - it's only been a week or so since my upgrade and I'm not totally used to it quite yet. I did have some glitches syncing my IPhone and IPad with my computer - the sync went okay but it put too many things on them that I didn't want and didn't give me the options not to sync certain items. Having a few little issues with ICloud - I'm not sure I did everything right and it may be my own fault.

I'm still playing around with it but if I learn anything interesting or helpful, I will certainly share! Hope others will too! I can use all the help I can get!

Hi Lou Ann - how frustating. I haven't upgraded yet, but I do hear your pain. :(

I agree with Sandi - never use bridge or Picassa. I actually store all my scrapping supplies in my "Documents" file same as any other documents. I have a folder called "Scrapbook" and in that one many other folders with the supplies. It's easy and I've had no trouble with the system - you could organize within the "Scrapbook" folder in any way easiest for you and make as many folders and files as you needed. I store my photos in iPhoto and have had no problems with it.

As for searching for answers, my first go-to for PE6 is the "Missing Manual" for Mac PE6. I find it very helpful and usually answers my question. I see that Amazon also offers missing manual books for Mac OS but don't see one for Lion.. Yet.. On the net, like you I usually just search, but use Yahoo search which I somehow always find better and a little different than Google. Usually a few Mac forums come up in the search results. My other go-to, of course is ScrapGirls. If you post a specific question, someone should come along - I'm just sorry Lion is new enough that there's not a lot of experience with it yet, to help you.

I hope I'm understanding you correctly, but when I search in the finder window and a file turns up that I want, if I look at the bottom of the window it shows the folder path where it is stored, file-by-file. If you click on any of these it will open that folder. I hope this is helpful and not what you are already doing?

Hang in -- Macs are truly wonderful and I'd never go back!

I don't use Picasa or Bridge either anymore although Bridge is constantly trying to open up when I turn my laptop on! I store all of my scrapping supplies right in my downloads folder under Scrap Girls and so far have had no problems at all with that (except that I lost everything last month and had to go to my EHD and re-do everything) and I still don't know what I did to make them get lost! It just seemed like they were all there and suddenly were gone.

As far as I know there is not a "Missing Manual" for Lion either but I would bet it won't be long before we do have one. And I agree, Marilyn - the best place to ask questions is to go to Scrap Girls! Someone always knows the answer!

Lion is just so new to me that I'm still struggling with it - like I said, I'm having problems syncing things - my IPhone no longer updates itself sycning with my computer for some reason and I have to work on that - I may go to my Mac guy for some help if I don't figure it out soon - it's starting to frustrate me a little and I just haven't found the time I need to work on it all.

But, no - I'm all Mac and I'd never go back either!

Just checked my favorite huge online bookstore (wink, wink) and the missing manual for lion is listed. Didn't check publication date so maybe not available yet. I keep all my scrapping stuff in a desktop folder labeled "scrapping" I know not very original but useful. I mainly just use search to find things. Even though I use iPhoto too, it's really not worth the trouble.

Well, I finally got everything to sync now .....the problem wasn't so much in the syncing itself but it just wasn't working when I would delete emails from my laptop, it wouldn't delete them from the phone (and I hated them all piling up in my phone) - now it's finally working!

So, guess I'm accomplishing something!

But, the one thing it did was to transfer ALL of my computer photos from IPhoto onto my phone and I didn't want it to do that.....it just did it on it's on when I synced them.

Anyone know how to get them off of the phone without going through each and every one of them?

I can't help you much with photo tagging part. I haven't decided myself. I'm currently using bridge that came with cs5 and AtomicView. Eventually I want aperture set up with photos, Atomic with scraps and bridge for whenever (still deciding between Bridge and Aperture)

As far as the address book. I think it's made more for looks. The "pages" can be turned with command [ or command ] all it does is scroll your addresses. So no real page turning at least that I have found. (I could be wrong)

Installing actions: Here's a good link for a walk-though on how to find it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FvFDvVclIGU

Once you find the folder you can drag the folder to the left under your favorites and a shortcut will be created there so it's easy to get to next time.

No mater what machine you have any time there is change there's something new to learn. hang it there. this too shall pass. :)

Sara, You can select to not sync your photos or what I do is only sync one album that I use just for ipod stuff.. You might be able to delete them through iphoto. I'm not sure. I'd have to try it myself.

i'll check it out.

Really? I can't find that option when I sync - I'll go have another look here in a little bit - thanks for telling me though - thanks for checking it out for me - I appreciate any and all help!

Sara what you want to do is plug in your ipod then pull up iphoto. sync anything new and delete the files from your ipod. While your there create an album of photos you'd like to have on your ipod.

Then pull up itunes and sync it. after it syncs then click on the photo tab and change the selection to "selected album..." Then select the album /s you'd like to add. It should remove the others and only put on what you want. Then sync again.

That should do it.

let me know how it works or if you need more help.

It's late and I had a very tiring day with my grandson, age 2 and his sister, age 6months but I wanted to chime in now and say that I am running Lion and using iCloud. One thing that I wasn't doing right as far as syncing (I have an iPad, no iPhone) was in iTunes I was ejecting my iPad like I do my iPod Nano. You don't want to do that. I think the only time you need to plug in your iDevice is if there is an update. I will get back to this thread in a couple of days to see what other questions need answering and see if I can help. I have also upgraded to PSE10 but haven't used it yet. I use Picasa and never Bridge. Good night! Judy

FYI...The Missing Manual for Mac OS X Lion is available, picked up a copy yesterday. I think I'd heard this somewhere before, but it didn't really make sense until I saw it in action, but the purpose of Lion is to make the computer look and behave as closely to an iPad as possible, things like full screen view and gestures and such. When I keep that in mind then it makes much more sense. Says there are 250 new features in Lion, some visible and some not. I'm thinking I may actually spend the time to learn more about it since it really is different. There is online support and training available too. In fact, Apple wants us to use it. Who knows what wondrous things we'll find.

That's good to hear, Sandi - I guess I'll go and order The Missing Manual today - I certainly do need it. I am making progress but it's slow and I could still use help. This thread has been a valuable tool for me - it's nice to hear from others who have upgraded to Lion.

I've ordered The Missing Manual - just waiting for it to get here now - I have a list of questions all ready to be answered! Everything's going pretty smoothly but I've run into a few problems that I just am not quite sure how to deal with - I think this is the first time I've been so stumped with my Mac issues!

I'm still in Leopard (not even Snow Leopard. It's on my list for this weekend, then Lion the following weekend). I'll be watching to see what others have to say.

I only went to Snow Leopard from Tiger over the summer. I had quite a few issues afterward, so I am reluctant to go to Lion. My MAC is almost five now and I'm wondering if its time to maybe retire this one and start fresh with Lion on a new machine. I just hate all the downtime from having to reinstall everything, resyncing, etc.!

So that said, just know I feel your pain!!!

There are some system requirements for running Lion, don't remember exactly what they are, but an older machine may not have what it takes to tame the lion. I love the service at the Mac store nearest me. I just bought an iMac and they set it all up and migrated everything (except some of my software), backed it all up to my time capsule and was good to go. I was without my laptop for two days though. That was inconvenient. But it saved me the headache of doing it all. Apple service is usually very good. The Apple geniuses and the Macologists are great to work with.

You know, I didn't think about it before, but at my Mac store, they even offer a class for free if they install the new Lion for you - kind of wish I'd let them install mine - probably the class is also available for a small fee. I haven't quite reached that point yet, stil waiting for my Missing Manual to arrive but if it comes down to it, I might just inquire about the class.

You're right, Sandi, the Macologists are great with whom to work!

I think that any Mac you buy now will already have Lion installed. My hubby bought a new 13" MacBook Pro in August and Lion was already on there. I think he used Migration Assistant to move his stuff over. I didn't have any issues with upgrading to Lion. I think my MacBook Pro is about 2 years old. And I agree, the staff at the Apple Stores are fantastic! I am fortunate to live in an area with 3 Apple Stores all about the same distance from me...Well, maybe one is closer than the others.

We have four Mac stores that I know of in Asheville - and lots and lots of Apple Techs that are in business for themselves too. But, it costs an arm and a leg to have them come over to my house and I try very hard to be able to take my problems into the store when I can.

Still waiting for my books!

The Missing Manual for.... always good, easy to understand and look things up in. The Mac store is about 2 hours from where I live and 3 hours from where I work....but worth the trip. There are a few new machines made just before Lion was released and they'll load it up for free. Most of the new machines have it on. My new iMac is mid 2011 and needed to have lion loaded. I had to go out of town for work the day after I picked up the new iMac, so I have this screaming' hot new computer sitting in a box at home. I'll get to set it up and play over the weekend after I get home.
