I've been reading a lot about art journaling and different tricks for giving LOs a deeper, more realistic feel. One thing that really gives a LO depth is when the fonts take on the characteristics of you paper...like in real life when you take a pen to paper.

I made a mini illustrated guide HERE.

Quick Example:

If you go into your layer properties, you will find you can manipulate the blend ranges-- I think in PS they are called "Blend If" and found by clicking the "fix" icon on the layers palette. You can use the sliders to blend the light and dark colors on you active layer and the layer underneath your active layer. Some pretty amazing things can happen when you play with the arrow sliders! The black arrows are for the dark tones and the white arrows are for the light tones.

PSE users don't have the option, but if you play with the colors, the blend modes, or use a grunge brush playing with opacity settings to erase some text, you can get the same effect.

This also works for blending several papers and elements together... it adds a whole new dimension to LOs!!

That's a great tip. I often use the blending modes (in PSE) to "set" my text into the background. Nice explanation, Carrie.
