scrapycat Posted January 24, 2012 Share Posted January 24, 2012 Not sure if its Vista "HP Pavilion PC" but I am losing a lot of pictures on my external hard drive bu and on the main C: drive. Every time I preview photo folders more photos are either chopped, color gone crazy and or sliced up into weird sections! It has been with photo files from 4 different cameras so I don't think its from them. It has taken me hours to burn DVDs with my photos (Vista is really slow) to save them from more corruption. Run, do not walk, to get as much backed up as possible, but don't overwrite older backups if you have them, as they might be in better shape. The slow backups are probably an indication of drive failure, as the system tries desperately to re-parse the files per the error correction codes built into the data storage. Backup length is also a function of the number of files; size is not more critical as EACH file must be read, initiated, written, and then verified. Find out the drive manufacturer in your Device Manager, and download their diagnostic tools. Run the full suite of tests. Here's the link for Seagate's SeaTools. Hope your C: drive isn't failing, and that you do have backups somewhere. Note: if the PREVIEW image in the file manager is chopped, but the file is ok, that is NOT a real problem; it's an artifact of thumbs files. (Notes from a disk drive designer in a former career) Thanks Barbara, I'll give the diagnostics a shot. The preview or "thumbs" are messed up and the actual photo files too (they started out fine).
