Help!! I think I've killed my external hard drive. It was making some funny noises last week, and today my computer doesn't recognize that it is there. Does ANYONE have any suggestions???

Thanks in advance!!

Have you restarted? Unplug it, restart and plug it back in.

Another thing you might want to do is check that the usb port works by plugging something else in also do you have another computer you can try plugging your EHD into?

Good idea, Sherry. Hope it starts up for you Lisa! Losing a hard drive is always a traumatic experience.

You might try a different USB cord, too. Keeping good thoughts for you!

I hope you take some of these suggestions and get it figured out - what could be worse than a dying EHD?

Ditto to all the above! I've had this happen ... It's so stressful. Hope it all works out. Let us know.

I don't know what kind of HD you have, but we had a Maxtor HD (not pocket drive) that did the same thing. Turned out to be the power supply, a fairly common problem, so we took the drive out of the case and installed it in our desktop as an extra drive. Our computer easily recognized it then. If you're not comfortable taking electronics apart, you might enlist the help of someone who is or take it to your local computer repair shop. Hope it works out!

Sometimes when mine get dusty, the fan starts running a lot and it makes a weird sound and will shut down. A good spray with some compressed air solves the problem.

I hope you get it figured out and that it's an easy fix!
