External Hard Drive

I don't know what kind of HD you have, but we had a Maxtor HD (not pocket drive) that did the same thing. Turned out to be the power supply, a fairly common problem, so we took the drive out of the case and installed it in our desktop as an extra drive. Our computer easily recognized it then. If you're not comfortable taking electronics apart, you might enlist the help of someone who is or take it to your local computer repair shop. Hope it works out!

Sometimes when mine get dusty, the fan starts running a lot and it makes a weird sound and will shut down. A good spray with some compressed air solves the problem.

I hope you get it figured out and that it's an easy fix!
