I've been scanning and putting things on CDs for safekeeping but I haven't gotten up the nerve to dispose of old paperwork (taxes etc) & Photos because I worry about what happens if my CD becomes damaged OR more worrisome is ... down the road, what happens if CDs become obsolete with some new technology. I would love to hear others thoughts on this and what you're doing.

I've worried about this, especially when I go back to retrieve a photo and the dvd isn't working. I finally decided to get Mozy and back up on line. You could also use an external hard drive for storage, but even those go bad, too. Hopefully someone else will have a good idea!

What Carla said - although in my house it's funny - I back up all of Rich's paperwork and have it stored in two different places and yet he can't bear to part with his hard copies1

I too have wondered the same thing. -- I do have EHD, but am hearing lately about those crashing too. Aye yi yi! -- I now keep all my photos on my camera on the SD card -- instead of deleting like I used to. When the SD fills up I get a new SD card. So there is at least one place for my pictures. And of course on my computer, and EHD. Also use Flash Drives for storage. I still dont know if I am covered - lol.
I am curious about Carla's suggestion -- MOZY online backup. I had KODAK's online gallery -- but unless you continue to buy products yearly from them, they would delete your entire gallery account!
Will technology ever offer anything full proof - ?? I dont know. For documents, I think there is nothing like the "paper trail".

For taxes you only have to store your info for so many years (is it 7? I don't know) - so presumably CDs will not be obsolete by then, and you can throw out even your CDs with older tax info on them.
It is confusing, isn't it?! This is why so many people are overwhelmed with it all! I applaud Ro for trying so hard not only at her home but helping us help ourselves as well.

The best solution is to have multiple back-ups, like DVD, EHD and online back-up. That's what I do.
