Ro, you mentioned transferring your videos to your computer and then burning to DVDs. I'd love to learn how to take all those different sized tapes from the past 30 years and transfer their contents to my computer. What equipment do I need? I know I no longer have the cameras that I took the videos with, so I can't transfer them that way.

It's super easy. I got this software - Honestech VHS to DVD 5.0 Deluxe - at Amazon. It comes with the software and the equipment - this little box and cables - that let you plug things in. The cables are just video and audio out. You plug in your tape player, video player, etc. into this little box they give you and the box is plugged into your computer via USB cable. Then you open the software, start recording and push the play button. You will see the video playing on your computer. If it is an audio, it will play and the software records it to your computer.

As long as your player allows for those video and audio out cables (they have the yellow, white, and red plugs on them), you are good to go.

Here's the Amazon link:

I've been wondering the same thing. Thanks for the info! Are you happy with the quality of the DVDs? Some of the reviews say they are not very good.

The movies look as soon as they do on the VHR tapes. They can't be better than the originals. But since my VHR tapes were deteriorating, I'm glad to have saved the movies!

Thanks RO - I read about this previously and looked at your link to Amazon. I have a Mac so that product doesn't work. I looked at others, don't expect you to know which would be good, but have you heard of any one product that would work on a mac? thanks. I understand if you don't since you don't work on Mac.

I'm sorry, I don't... but if you Google it, you may be led to something!

My son-in-law just got this software and is in the process of transferring some old tapes and stuff - I'll be anxious to see how he does with it! Sounds like a great idea to me! And I'm very grateful of all the time he's putting into saving all of our old tapes! My daughter and I had a big laugh the other day over one of the VHS tapes she had watched that they were going to copy - she said we all had big hair in the video and were all dressed in big, long skirts - can't wait to see it!

Just now re-reading this and realizing it will do audio tapes as well. I have a ton of those I'd love to transfer, and the "patching it from the boombox" method gives less than desirable results.
