I purchased the LCO Birthday Blowout brushes. Each brush consists of a cluster of words and some balloons and other birthday stuff. The Sample pages that came with the brushes shows different colors for each element in the cluster. I have loaded the brushes and can get one color for the whole cluster but can't figure out how to get different colors for each element. I have attached one of the sample layouts that came with the brushes. I have read through all of the brush instructions. Can anyone help me? Thanks, Linda

It might be easier to work with the .png files? I don't have that set, so I can't be of more help.

Linda, in looking at the layouts I would suggest that you could possibly use the lasso tool on the elements you want to change the color of and "cut" so they are on a new layer, then recolor them. April aka April Showers did the layouts on the boutique page (I am assuming they are probably the same ones that came as samples) and if you pm her I am sure she will give you some tips.

I created those samples. I colored them with color overlays. I'll go open the file and get a screen shot of the layers panel so you can better see what I did.

Okay, I colored different parts of it different ways. That layout has a bazillion layers. I think the screen shot would be really confusing. You will want to use the png file to create a look similar to what I did. First, I used new layers for some parts of the template. You can create layers from the png file by selecting the area you want on its own layer (I have the words on their own layer) After you make the selection, choose Layer>New>Layer via Copy (Control+J). This will copy your selection to a new layer. I added a style to the words. And the striped candle is just a new layer I created above the word with a paper clipped to it. I also duplicated flame on the letter i so I could make it yellow.
You can add a color overlay to your new layer and adjust the blending mode until you get the look you want. I used more than one blending mode on the samples. I colored the jester hat by painting on a new layer I created above it. I made a selection (hold down control while clicking on the layer thumbnail) before I brushed on the new layer. This made it much easier to stay in the lines. I painted most of the colors on the same layer- just changing my brush color for the different areas. When I did the yellow parts, I painted on a new layer because it needed a different blending mode than the other colors.

I hope that makes sense!

Thanks for that explanation April! I love that tip of control/clicking on the layer in the layer's palette to get the "marching ants" before brushing on a new layer - keeps you within the lines every time and makes it so easy!

Thanks for all the info April. I keep forgetting there is more than one way to skin a cat. (As my Mother would always say) I'm going to save your answer so that I can refer back to it. Thanks for asking the question Isdoane.
