Hi

I am quite new to PSE scrapbooking and I have just bought the altered art template, but I don't know how to use them. when I try to fill them with diferent colours the template fills mainly with one. doesn't look anything like the sample!!!!
Can anyone teach me how to use this? It is called 'Altered Art Essentials 1"

Thanks

Irene

Hello Irene, welcome to Scrap Girls!
To help you get started with the Altered Art Templates, here is an excellent tutorial in the University which may be helpful to you: Introduction to ScrapSimple Paper Templates for Digital Scrapbooking. You'll also find some information in the free handbook here: Scrap Girls ScrapSimple Instructions Handbook (Free ScrapSimple basics eBook). Let us know if you still need more help. :)

These are paper templates and the best way to use them is to fill the layer below them or place another paper below them and then with the template layer selected you change change the layer - in PSE you will see on the right side the word Layers and below that a box with the word normal - beside this is a little arrow and if you click on that there will be a drop down - then just click on one of those effects and try them out to see which look you like.

When you fill the layer below the template you can add a style to that if you want to give it texture.

Another way to work with these templates is to fill a layer above the template with your chosen colour and then have it selected and hold down the alt key as you move the curser to the layers palette and hover it between the two layers and you will see a double circle - left click and the colour should have filled the design of the template.

I am sure there will be something in the SG University that will help. Have a look at the list and see which one may also help you: http://www.scrapgirl...r_Templates.htm

Irene,
Do you mind me asking... what were you expecting it to do? We still might be able to help you achieve whatever it is you were hoping for. Never hesitate to ask for any help you may need.

On the scrap book page it looks like brush strokes, I can't get that effect. I use the magic wand and the selection then fills with solid colour.

Just realised you're my neighbour!!!! I live in New Zealand!

Irene, are you trying to achieve the effect that is on one of the sample pages that came with the templates?
I just looked in the boutique at the set you have bought and looking at the samples there - they have been placed on top of patterned papers plus a couple have had styles applied to them.

I hope you looked at the instructions in the University to help you with using the templates.

New Zealand... we have Jane who is very active on the forum who is from New Zealand. My brother and his wife, Julia live at Rotorua. Julia was born and grew up in New Zealand.

Irene, I'd like to reiterate TeeCee's guidance here. The most important techniques that I have not heard mentioned yet in our ad-hoc advice above are 1) CHANGE the blending mode of the color layer over the brushed template, and 2) reduce the opacity of the layer blended in. You can also try reversing the stacking order of the color and template, and still do 1 & 2. Hope this helps, and welcome to Scrap Girls!

This is great information from Barbara, and information on changing the blending mode and reducing the opacity can also be found in the free handbook: Scrap Girls ScrapSimple Instructions Handbook (Free ScrapSimple basics eBook) in the ScrapSimple Paper Templates section on pages 50-61. :)
