I am attempting a home decor project in which I am going to mount a large digitally-scrapped poster-size image (printed at Costco so it's on photo quality paper) onto a canvas. Please chime in and tell me if I'm right about this plan:

1. I'm going to coat the canvas with Mod Podge to act as "glue" for putting the poster/photo on the canvas. I'll trim the corners so that they lie flat around the edges of the canvas. Or should I use spray adhesive to get the photo to stick to the canvas? Which has longer staying-power - Mod Podge or spray adhesive?

2. I think I should paint a few coats of Mod Podge on top of the photo. This is the part the scares me - I sure don't want to mess up at this point! Do I wait until the "glue" level of Mod Podge is dry (between the canvas and photo) before painting the top coats?

3. How many top coats should I paint?

4. ANY ADVICE is welcome! This is my first attempt at anything like this! I will be sure to post a pic in the Gallery when I get it finished. The finished size is 18x24. I have some smaller pics/canvases to complement the large image. Maybe I should start on the small ones for practice.

Thanks!
Cindy

I have done this on smaller canvases using the Mod Podge, but I ended up getting some air bubbles. Of course, I may have done something wrong. It was my first time using the Mod Podge, so I wasn't completely familiar with it. On others I have used two-sided "tacky" tape. I'd love to hear what others have to say about it! Thanks for bringing this up! :cheeringdog:

If it were mine, I would probably use spray mount adhesive on both the canvas and the back of the photo. I'm no modge podge expert though. What is the finish on the photo? If you're going to do the modge podge, I would definitely try it out on a smaller print with the same finish to see what it looks like.

My Gallery I scrap with Photoshop CS6, but can help with older versions: PS7, CS2 & CS4. Posted Image

Mod Podge can make inkjet paper run. You could ask the Costco photo people what they recommend. You can spray a fixitive on the print. I would definitely try a few smaller samples. You might be happier with a spray coating than with Mod Podge.

Ditto to what everyone else has said - Mod Podge can be tricky and I'd hate to see your layout ruined!

Oh good question! I think there have been tutorials in the newsletter about putting photos on canvas. I would use the spray adhesive like April recommended. Mod podge (which I love!!) would not be necessary but could be helpful as a sealer depending on the look you are going for. (I tried searching my newsletters but didn't find the tutorial I was thinking of)

I'm really no help, am I?

Think I'll have to try out the spray adhesive. That sounds like a good idea!

Here's a tutorial by Brandy Murry where she suggests using a clear acrylic spray to prevent the ink from smearing. Here's another tutorial by Amy where she uses Mod Podge on canvas blocks.

Thanks, everyone! Still not sure what I'll do - other than try it out on one of my smaller prints first.

It is not printed on inkjet so smearing should not be a problem. It's printed at Costco like a regular picture - only much bigger (printed as 20x30 and I'll cut it down to mount on 18x24). It's printed with their "lustre" finish, not glossy.

I would definitely want to put something on top of it to seal it b/c it's going to hang in the guest bathroom so it will be exposed to sink splashes and general humidity on occasion. Whether that's Mod Podge or some kind of acrylic spray, I'm not sure....

Spray adhesive, I have on the shelf. Acrylic spray, nope. Is that something easy to locate at Michaels or Hobby Lobby? Any recommendations?

I tend to have a hard time getting an even coat with spray adhesive... I'm a spray adhesive klutz! Kinda nervous about that but I will attempt the 11x14s first to get some experience.

Sooooooo appreciate all the input!

I'm crossing my fingers for you!
And looking forward to the end results.

I've used Mod Podge for collage, using magazine pages. The colors didn't run, but the Mod Podge does leave some texture on the surface of your art work. For collage, that's a plus, but it might not be the look you are going for. Also, as you probably know, Mod Podge comes in matte or glossy.
I'm a spray klutz, too! One thing that has helped me is keeping a foam brush handy (one of those real cheapies). As soon as I spray, I spread the spray around with the brush, so that the finish is a little smoother.
Good luck! I can't wait to see how it turns out!

I've used Modge Podge to glue my photo right to the canvas, then a big sloppy mess of glue with tons of texture and I didn't have any running problems. Mine were prints from Costco also, although the prints for the canvas blocks I printed at home and they didn't run either.

I have used glossy and was happy with the look - but if you have lustre prints you might like the matte.

I'm no Modge Podge expert either. I have used it without problems, but they were small inexpensive projects.
