I just had to share this tale in case anyone else ever has the same problem...

I have an SD card reader that allows me to view all my camera photos on my iPad. Its great for times when you're on vacation and you want to pull a photo off your camera and e-mail it or post it to Facebook. So I plugged in the reader and my husband and I sat there checking out all the photos I had taken over the past three days. I "thought" I had checked a few duds off for deletion, and pressed the delete button... then watched in horror as my card was wiped clean!!!! When I tell you I was SO upset that I was on the verge of hysteria, I am not exaggerating.

Fortunately, I am married to a computer guy that stays much calmer in the face of digital disaster. He said that cameras don't actually delete anything, they just mark the photo space as available for rewriting. He immediately researched and downloaded software that was able to retrieve almost all the photos I had just deleted! It didn't work for the videos, which I was okay with since my videos are less then thrilling, but he managed to retrieve almost everything else! A few photos were damaged but fortunately it was only about 4 out of 1200.

The software wasn't too expensive - I think it was $40 - but really I would have paid anything to get my photos back. So I wanted to share in case anyone else ever has this problem. The most important thing is that you don't use the card again until the photos are retrieved. If you do, you will wind up overwriting that "free space" and your photos will truly be lost forever. Thank God I had extra SD cards with me that I could use while my main one was out of commission.

So now I'm telling everyone - learn from my stupidity! You can get your photos back if you ever need to!

Oh my goodness, I know that hollow stomach feeling! Back when we used those little electronic data bases before new fangled phones, I got mine wet, and watched the numbers roll backwards. There was nothing I could do! I've also lost all of my Sg supplies, and some photos. One of my cameras just stopped with photos on it, and I don't have a pc guru at home. I'm glad you were able to retrieve most of your photos.

I've found that if I delete the images in camera, I can't get them again, but if I delete them on the computer... they show up if I upload into Lightroom. I found it out unintentionally at convention, but it is a handy trick.

I had to check with him but he said it was Stellar Phoenix Photo Recovery Software. One of our neighbors came over with a card they accidentally deleted, and he was able to retrieve their photos and videos. We're not sure why the videos didn't work from my camera. He was guessing its how the files are saved. In any event, we are now up to two satisfied customers! It was well-worth the $40!
