3 weeks ago (2 days before we got the new puppies) Buddie jumped out of the truck and hurt his foot. We took him to the vet and she said it was probably just a sprain. Last Weds. we took him to see Fred (our vet that has taken care of them since they were babies - he has sold his practice but still goes in on Weds.) and he thought that maybe it was an infected toenail and put him on a 500mg antibiotic AND a 300 mg pain killer, he is in so much pain that he is trying to walk on the inside of his foot AND it is putting a lot of extra strain on his poor arthritis filled hip After a full week on the anti-biotic he still wasn't any better so Thursday I called Lucerne to see if I could have him looked at by Odie's oncologist. She did x-rays and sure enough the toe is cancerous - she did blood work to make sure that it hadn't spread AND x-rayed his lungs to make sure everything looked OK there to see if he could even be considered for surgery. She called me yesterday afternoon and said his blood work was excellent AND we could schedule the surgery - I didn't want to wait because of all the pain he is in - so Monday morning I will take him to have his "pinky" toe on his right front foot amputated :( --- if you have a spare moment please say a prayer that he makes it through the surgery AND he comes out of it pain free and can run and play again.

Updated 4pm Monday --- Thank you all so much for the prayers --- Buddie's surgery went very well, Dr. Miles said that she can't imagine how much pain he was in - the end of the toe was - well basically disintegrating. She sent it off to be diagnosed - she also removed a bunch off his rearend which she didn't like the looks of AND said that one could have ruptured and would have created some problems down the road, so that is taken care of too --- 2 birds with one stone! We have him home and he is still pretty groggy but all in all he is doing fine!

Sending you hugs, dear friend. I know the surgery will go well, and Buddie will be back to his exuberant self in no time. One of our best dog friends had a toe amputated, and acted like nothing had happened. They are just so resilient!

Bless your heart, Sherry! This has to be tough so soon after Odie. I'm so glad they caught this early, and the prognosis is good. Asking for extra angels to watch over Buddy and guide his surgeon.
big hugs,

Prayers are being sent to St. Francis of Assisi for Buddie. I hope all goes well for him (and you) tomorrow:

Good St. Francis, you loved all of God's creatures.
To you they were your brothers and sisters.
Help us to follow your example
of treating every living thing with kindness.
St. Francis, Patron Saint of animals,
watch over my pet and keep my companion safe and healthy.
Amen.
