So there are gradient fill layers, gradient overlays, and the gradient tool. How do you actually know which one you want/need to use? And can anyone point me to some good instructions on creating my own gradients as opposed to using a pre-made one?

Hi Dianne,

I love gradients, and have played around with them a little, but unfortunately I don't know enough about them to answer your questions. I don't know if these will be any help, but here a some tutorials:

Using Color Gradients with ScrapSimple Templates in Photoshop or PSE

How to Color ScrapSimple Embellishments with Gradients

Using Gradients in Photoshop Elements to Color Papers, Embellishments, and Photos

Here's some more:
Using the Gradient Tool in Photoshop and Photoshop Elements (Part 1)
Using the Gradient Tool in Photoshop and Photoshop Elements (Part 2)
Using the Gradient Tool in Photoshop and Photoshop Elements (Part 3)

There is also a little information about creating gradients is this tutorial: Coloring ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates

Maybe someone else will come along with more specific answers to your questions. HTH :)

I used to use gradients all the time, then got away from them and forgot most of what I knew! Thanks for asking the question and for all the links!

I think I asked this before but I forget. I have since started taking written notes. What exactly does the term gradient mean?

Sorry I don't know have an exact definition, but something I found on the internet states a gradient is a gradual blend between multiple colors. Maybe someone else will come along with more information. HTH :)

Thanks Theresa :) That's all I really needed to know. Something simply, easy to understand and remember.
