This is a request to all designers...

I LOVE word art, love it! The only problem I have and I suspect many others have too is that when we buy kits with words wuch as favorite, color, mom etc we cannot use them in our layouts as they are spelled wrong for us... As an Aussie I know we have English spelling, which means that our English SG's as well as our South African and most of Europe SG's have the same spelling... we spell our words as colour, favourite, mum etc...

I know SG's is U.S. based and I don't mean to make things difficult but if designers were able to make these simple additions it would allow MANY of us to more fully use the word arts we buy... I know you can do 8.5 x 11 and this is much easier... PLEASE???

Just a thought as I come across it often....

Thanks for reading,
Jody :-)

Hmmm.. I never thought of this Jode, but I guess if you used the American word art it would look like you misspelled something!

Right. I like the alternate spellings, too, even though I don't use them. They look pretty!

What a great idea! We often forget that American English is not universal.

I know in the past there have been some of the Aussie/Canadian/English etc. spellings included in the word art. Hopefully, Jo Corne keeps that in mind when she's designing. ;) It does seem like it would be fairly easy to include both spellings for the words that come up, but then I'm not a designer.

I'm making a note of these particular words. If you think of any others ones, post it and I will add it to my list. Because I never use them, I really would never know. I often use the word favorite/favourite in my word art. In fact, going to add it to a current project now!

As a child I often got in trouble with the teacher, after reading books, for spelling words with the English or Spanish spelling. Of course, I was probably about half- there in class.
I'd never thought about it being a prolem like you mention!

Watercolor is another word that is often spelled with an ou.

I wonder if the designers would consider doing the alternative form as a freebie on collections that are already on the shelves? In some cases, is it feasible to split the word and add the u from the alpha, if one is included and looks close enough? Too bad it isn't the o - that would be really easy!

Thanks Brandy, this will be really nice for us who spell our words a little different. I am going to put my thinking cap on and see what other words to keep in mind.

Thanks for bring this up Jody. I often can't use word art due to American spellings.

I'd like to add another one to the list, not a spelling but use of the word. We don't go on vacation, in the UK we go on Holiday. The word Holiday as you use it, is not used here, we refer to each "holiday" by it's name, Christmas, Easter, etc.

As an Aussie I would also love love LOVE to have wordart that's spelled the right way for us. When I was at school if I spelled words the American way the teacher would mark these words as being incorrect and I'd have to rewrite them the proper way. It's the same way now for my kids. Having wordart spelled our way would be absolutely wonderful and I thank all the designers for thinking about doing this for us. And thankyou Jode for bringing up the subject!

What a great idea Gayle. I never thought to split the word and add the U. It would help to have word art though. Thanks Brandy.

oh yes Jody, this is one I have to be very careful with when putting my word art together... in my latest collection, Under The Boardwalk, I have used the words vacation as well as holiday as we don't call it a vacation down here (I know that is not spelling related but ...) so I will certainly keep that in mind whenever designing word art that will have the different spellings. I know I did it in my FunkyHannukah collection as we just don't call it Hannukah but channukah, with or without the 'h' at the end, it always gets me.

thank you for giving us the heads-up, will definitely keep this in mind

Great post Jode. Thanks Valarie, I do try to consider the spelling variations when designing. As you mentioned in the recent digiDoer collection I have included various forms of words such as holiday and vacation, favourite and favorite etc. I am so glad for this reminder to consider all kinds of spelling when designing. Thanks to Anne-Marie for the website on differences.

Jode thanks for bringing this subject up its been on my mind for quite a while.

I think Mom, favorite, vacation and color are the main ones and we use MUM FAVOURITE and COLOUR in NZ as well but as I'm English I'll definatly use the English words. People here say vacation and holidays so its not a biggie although I always use holidays.

Down here we very rarely use Happy Holidays at christmas its usually Merry or Happy Christmas :)

Oh wow! What a response! I am glad it isn't just me... :-) I totally agree with the other British English girls out there, and applaud Valerie for coming up with holidays vs vacation as well as Holidays vs Christmas/Easter etc We do not tend to say Happy Holidays here either, we are like England and New Zealand and say Merry Christmas or Happy Easter... And we don't go on vacation, we take holidays... Good pick up!! The other one I thought of along a similar vein was autumn vs fall... In Australia at least (and I suspect NZ, England, Sweden, South Africa!) we say Autumn - NOT Fall... You are all going into it now as we are into spring but it would be nice for us to have Autumn word art :-) I know this seems almost picky as yes, we can make our own and often do, but sometimes you want a uniform title and you just can't :-(
I love the idea Gayle about adding the u, I have edited lots of word art but some you just can't... For instance, Brandy's gorgeous handwriting!
Thanks to Jacqui and Jo for doing this (I know you live where we spell the same!) and THANKYOU to Brandy for taking it on board... I didn't realize to start with how many of us do use British English!
Am glad I brought it up and thank you to all who replied, it does feel good to know I had a good idea!!! Big grin :-D

I'm also British so agree with the comments above. I understand that it is more work for the designers, but I thought I'd just add that I'm likely to buy more kits if there were alternative spellings available as I have previously not bought kits if they only have American words such as Mom and Fall. Although that may not be so good for my credit card ;)

Two additions I'd like to add for awareness although I'm not sure there is any demand at the moment is s/z and ll/l, for instance organise/organize and journalling/journaling.
