Charlene's article about her hair make me smile. Talking about getting her hair cut... oh, how I can relate right now in my life! I too have straight hair that I try to keep about shoulder length and I haven't changed my hairstyle since high school..and I'm now 56! I would go to the hairdresser and cringe for every little hair that she cut off. "Don't go too short!", I would tell her while my hands gripped the arm rests. Then I got breast cancer. Last week I was tired of worrying about when my hair was going to start falling out so I went in and told her to "cut it off." We laughed over how calm I was while my long hair dropped to the floor. She cut it short all over and.... I LOVED IT!!! It was so short and sassy and everyone told me I look so much younger. I should have done it years ago! This past weekend the inevitable happened and I am now bald. Not loving that look so much but am taking away how much I've learned and grown from this experience; how much my priorities in life have changed to ones that are more important. I've realized that my hair does not define me. How silly I was just a few months ago when I got all teary eyed over the fact I was going to lose my hair. This cancer has forced me to slow down. I was lying in bed the other day feeling like a truck had run over me and this wonderful breeze came through the window - gently blowing the sun-dappled leaves around outside my window and moving across my face. What a perfect moment and even better... I was able to lie there and take it in and appreciate it. I hope that once I get through this and my life goes back to 90 miles an hour, that I am able to retain this ability to stop and appreciate the smaller gifts we are sometimes given yet fail to notice.

Bald and Beautiful (at least on the inside!)

Thank you, Bobbi for sharing your beautifully written words with us. My heart goes out to you and I will pray for comfort and healing for you. I agree - what a beautiful spirit you have!

My best friend, also a Bobbie, is going through the same thing. She was diagnosed with breast cancer a couple of months ago and has finished up her chemo and did the same thing as you did - she had her beautiful chestnut hair cut - it was past her shoulders and knowing she was going to lose it all anyway she had it cut very short. She's bald and beautiful now and I have to say that she carries her new look very well.

My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Bobbi, thanks so much for sharing your touching story. I pray that your upbeat attitude carries you through this rough time and helps you to recover ever so quickly. A dear friend of mine is going on 17 years cancer-free after her diagnosis of breast cancer. Something positive unexpectedly came out of her treatment. Her hair had been poker straight all her life and she had spent a small fortune on perms. When her hair grew back, it was CURLY. Go figure. Best of luck to you!! Kathy

Thanks everyone for the kind words! I am still a little shocked when I catch my reflection somewhere but I ripped my uncomfortable wig off at work today and announced "it is what it is!" Co-workers handled it very well, some of the customers couldn't look at me when talking, but that's their issue, not mine. It felt liberating!! LOL I highly recommend it for anyone dealing with "chemo hair!"

Bobbi, your story is so beautifully written and so from your heart - I wonder if you would mind if I copied it and emailed it to my friend, Bobbie who is going through exactly what you are going through right this minute. Let me know - I won''t copy it until I hear from you. I think it would make my understand that she's not alone with some of her feelings.
