Over the past year, I've been learning to play taiko - the Japanese word for "drum." I'm sure you have all seen my several posts and layouts about this experience. But it's hard to get the full taiko experience through photos alone... so I wanted to share a video of my performance from Sunday evening, so you can see/hear it for yourself :)

Enjoy!

Taiko performance

(Our community group was given the opportunity to perform at the Japanese Festival, prior to the main group's performance. This was our first time performing in public!! It was so exciting, and we did a great job!! A layout about the performance is in progress... )

You Rock! Apparently it so inspired my husband that he's watching a variety of Taiko performances. :)

That is great - I love it. I love drums, any kind of drums/percussion. Especially without vocals - haha! I have never seen taiko though - very cool to watch your performance. Thanks for sharing!

You're right - stills and a description don't do it justice. That is a very impressive workout! You go, Girlfriend!

If you are impressed by my little group, feel free to search for other videos of "St. Louis Osuwa Taiko" on YouTube - they are the main performance group who have been teaching our classes. I'm still trying to work up to their advanced skill level ;)

Awesome and amazing job Tiza! I got all excited watching that and now it's bedtime - will I sleep or will the song reverberate through my head all night? :) So cool!!

That was amazing. It's lovely to watch. Well done. I would hate to be the one beating the brass looking drum in the background. She has her arms in the air all the way through.

Maybe! The songs are constantly running through my mind. When you watch a taiko performance in person, you can feel it reverberating through your whole body - it's an awesome feeling ;)

That drum is fun to play - makes you feel powerful. But it really works your back & shoulder muscles, and takes LOTS of energy!

WOW, this was wonderful and that's just what I was thinking- you must have muscles! Great to actually see what you've described to us and the performance was super! Thanks so much for sharing, Theresa. :)

That was cool, Tiza! I've never seen anything like that. How did you get interested in it?

My cousin got me into it. His birthday is at the beginning of September, which always coincides with the Japanese Festival here in St. Louis. He's a huge fan of Japanese culture, music, anime, martial arts, etc... so about 4 years ago, he started taking me to the J-Fest for his birthday celebration. The taiko performances were always our favorite part of the festivals. Every fall after the festival, the group offers a beginner's level class. I finally decided to take the class last year, and have been hooked on it since the first time I hit a drum.

Thanks for sharing, Tiza! After hearing about your learning experience, it was so cool that you showed us what you've been learning. Fantastic job! You should be proud of your accomplishment. What's next for you in taiko?

Next I just keep going to my weekly classes, learn new songs, and constantly work on improving my technique! Maybe one day in the future the performing group will have tryouts again, and I'll give that another shot ;)
