I never know where to post questions!!!

We will be moving in a month or two and will be changing phone companies, even though we are only moving about 5 miles away. I JUST found out that the phone company we will have does not offer high speed internet at our new location. W H A T? How is this possible?? The new house is on highway!! Sigh. So....I guess we are looking at an alternative high speed server. Any suggestions? Hughes net? DirecTv/Dish? Something through a cellular company? Those of you who live "rural" and don't have high speed/dsl through your phone/cable company, who do you use? Do you love it? Hate it? What should I look for? I just counted and there are 10 devices that will use it. (could be more if I hook up ALL the computers, but don't plan to) 3 cell phones, 2 tablets, 3 laptops, plus at least 1 if not 3 desk tops!! UGH. And really, dial up isn't an option...LOL I MIGHT be spoiled....

I'm frustrated!! Getting on the phone now.

Thanks so much for listening to my rant! Any thoughts or suggestions you have will be greatly appreciated!!!

I'm lucky that even though I'm rural we have cable co. that provides really great high speed. I feel your pain, don't know what i'd do without it. Now if only I could get a phone signal.....

We have internet, but before we moved, dh had an air card through Verizon. It limited how much he could use it, but he never came close. The other option besides an air card what a hot spot for multiple devices. I don't anything about that one because he didn't go with it, but if you have Verizon for your cell phones, it might be worth looking into. I'm surprised they don't have high speed internet for you there. It's not like you are in rural Montana!

Ugh! Conda, how horrible! My recommendation is to check with your cellular company and to check with satellite TV companies. I would be very careful about the "hot spot" that Carla is talking about. You can get a device that goes through the cellular company and you can just use a smart phone. I don't know much about the separate device, but I don't recommend using you cell phone as a hot spot. The cell phones are only designed for short term use and basically just surfing the net and checking e-mail. The sales rep I talked to at Best Buy said that he literally melted his phone (not just fried the innards, but literally one gob of melted, phone-shaped plastic) while using it as a hot spot for gaming. A little extreme, but...

HTH! BTW, have you PM'd Kim (Podiumchick)? She's in rural Indiana. I don't know what she has, but she might be a good resource.

If my house were two lots down the street there would be no cable. LOL. On the edge of civilization.

Carla, I used my cell phone as a hot spot while we were on vacation and honestly, didn't have it in use for more than about 1.5 hours - next month our cell bill had increased by $40 plus dollars! Needless to say I won't use that again!

I had an air card too and it was great - gave it up when the contract was up cause I had by then gotten my Iphone and thought the hot spot was the way to go - NOT!

Yes, indeed, we are tethered to high speed Internet. DD#2, a physician, is thinking of taking a year of volunteer service overseas, and has as her number one requirement hi speed connections, even ahead of a good school for her kiddos! The fact is that if you have a good Internet connection you can do home schooling. What a great time we live in!
And so glad this turned out to be a non issue for you, Conda!

Yes, I'm rural. About 7 miles from town and an hour from 'the city'. We use the Verizon Wireless Mifi Hotspot. Up to 5 devices can be online at once. We have no problems with the exception of the limit. We pay for the 5 GB monthly limit. I started having trouble going over when they started including the album pages with the SG Club. Or we go over when the college kids are home for the summer. If you go over it is $10/GB. Still cheaper than any dish/satellite company for us.

. . . which is exactly why I put the nix on DH's idea of "living in the country" (in some other unnamed state - LOL!) when we retire. well, that and he's afraid of bugs and hates to cut the grass and can't fathom not living close enough to a pizza shop. Been there, done all that where I grew up!.

This makes me laugh Diane!! My DH has some "interesting" plans for our retirement...he would like to travel. Great right?? Well, yes, but he wants to travel via a semi trucking and seeing the country. Deluxe living quarters on board. Ok...I can may maybe see this. When we discuss it he's like, "I know...as long as you have your lap top, cell phone (tablet and kindle) and internet everywhere"...yep!! That's right!!

I've always lived in the country...I'm excited that the new house will be on the highway....that means BLACK TOP!!!!! I've lived on gravel for over 15 years!! I like having a clean vehicle and it is impossible right now!
