Last week I went with my son to visit North Georgia College (Military College of Georgia) to meet with the director of Cadet admissions. We were very impressed with the program and the college, and he has been accepted ~ now to get all the details sorted. The plan is to enlist in the Army Reserves, get a dual degree - physics from North Georgia College, then engineering from Georgia Tech. Prayers would be welcome, as this is making me a bit more emotional than I anticipated. :) So very proud of him!!! <3

Durin, I know you must be very, very proud of your son for making these momentous life decisions! How wonderful that he wants a military career! As the wife of an AF career man, I have to say that from my side of it, there's nothing quite like it! It's wonderful! Rich would agree with me too!

Sending prayers for all of those emotions you are feeling and for guidance and success for your son!

...........and GO GEORGIA! (Born a Georgia girl and the daughter of a University of GA grad, I guess I can still say that!) :) :) :)

That's wonderful, Durin. I can't imagine the feelings that accompany decisions like that. Congrats to your son...and to you for bringing him along to the place in his life!

Congratulations to you and your son! Will he be joining the Corps of Cadets? Joining the Army Reserve while in college is a great way to get your feet wet, so to speak. If he (or you) has any questions about the Army Reserve I would be glad to help out as much as I can. I'm 6 years out of date, but I should be able to point you in the right direction if I don't know the answer. Carla's DH is in the same program I was - active duty to support the Army Reserve. Neither DH nor I went through ROTC, but together we had 47 years commissioned service, and we both love to mentor. :)

Welcome to the Army Family! Families also serve.

Thank you all so much! Yes, I am extremely proud of him ~ he continues to amaze me with his determination and positive attitude. Quite the young man. :)

Yes, he will be in the Corps of Cadets and be in the simultaneous enrollment program with the Reserves. :)

North Georgia recently started offering this special dual degree program with GA Tech. It will mean 5 years college total, with the last two actually being in Atl, and an extremely challenging course load, but he can do it. :)

He's just an all-around good kid, and I adore him! :)

Congratulations!! First of all, you do not look old enough to have a son getting ready for college! Second, as Gayle said, the Army Reserve is a great way to get started! Dh is active duty, but works in Reserve units. If you have any questions, I can ask dh for you.

Your son sounds like a wonderful person and I look forward to hearing about his accomplishments!

I'm sure you are so proud of him :) a dual degree and in the Reserves, he will be a very busy young man. It's so hard to let them spread their wings and fly. My prayers for you and your family.

The lieutenants in my Officer Basic Course who had been Simultaneous Membership Program cadets really had a leg up on everyone else. That unit experience really grounded them. Even though there are differences between the Reserve Components and the Active Army, they have more things in common. Just being exposed to those will really help. It will also give him an opportunity to see many different leadership styles, and help him identify which aspects of these leadership styles seem to have positive or negative effects on motivation and accomplishing the mission.

Thank you for all your kind words, prayers and thoughts, ladies! :) The wonderful thing about this school is that the cadets live the military lifestyle 24/7. They live in dorms together, have inspection, uniforms every day and the cadet program is respected and is the "center" of the college. Plus, the college itself gave us a huge sense of peace ~ nestled in the North Georgia mountains, and the campus blends right into a charming downtown area. And, to top it all off, cadets basically get an "all-you-can-eat" pass at the cafeteria, lol. :D

It will give him a bit of a leg up if he later attends Ranger School also - the mountain phase is held near Dahlonega. DH has very vivid memories of that. :)
