I apologize if this question has been answered somewhere here before, I've looked and can't find it anywhere.

I like working on 12x12 sized pages, but have yet to actually print anything out; my stuff so far is posted on-line for friends and family. Anyway, I'd like to put together a family tree type of book and print it out for family members and am wondering what any of you have found to be the maximum number of pictures you like to put on a page. I will admit to having a very hard time eliminating any pictures, but know that I must. Right now I have the last page or two of my on-line books where I do a college type of thing, but usually don't go more than 6 or 7 photos per page (mind you that's not for every page, that's just the max if I put more photos on a page). When I do the 6/7 on a page, I usually have one or two larger the remaining ones about the same size and a little smaller.

I look forward to any suggestions or comments you want to share.

Honestly, I think a lot of us a right there with you. Getting rid of picture, no matter how obviously horrible, is tough. I tend to put a lot of pictures (8 or more) on a few pages, and then spotlight one or two on their own pages. When I'm working with lots of pictures, I rely pretty heavily on templates. I mostly make 1-photo LO's but sometimes up to 4 (once even 9!). When I have more than 2 I use a template like Monica suggested.
A family photobook is such a wonderful idea! Good luck with your project!

Possibly the most I work with is 7 which is for my Project 52 pages ( a photo a day for a week to a page )

I tend to have my photos grouped in odd numbers on my layouts, so 1, 3, 5 or even 7 works for me. I feel like having them grouped like that gives more interest to the page as well as making sure it feels balanced. It's especially important (to me, at least, ha) to have enough white space on my layout when there are a lot of photos, just to balance out the visual weight on the layout overall. I use layout templates all the time to help achieve that.

Ladies! Thank you for taking the time to answer my question. I really like the idea of using the template(s), at least until I develop more confidence in my own work. I've just kinda been plopping photos onto a page and what looks good on the monitor (which is the only place they're being viewed from so far), I worry may not look "right" in actual print form. I have PhotoShop and they have a few very basic templates, but sometimes I go beyond the number they have. I need to take the plunge. I may try a small book first, and see what that looks like before I go for the BIG book with lots of pages.

Laurel, I can relate to your using odd number of pictures; I do the exact same thing when I plant flower groupings, it's visually more pleasing. Funny how I didn't think of that for pictures.

My layouts vary. For some I use just one photo. For others, I fill the page with 5 or more photos.

Monica suggested Layout and Album templates. These are great ones for using multiple photos:

Templates are a great tool for helping with photo placement. One of the great things about the layered psd files are that you can mix and match, add and subtract elements of different templates to get the look you want.

You've asked a really good, but difficult to answer question. I do a lot of layouts with one, two or three photos but sometimes you just need to use more. The fact that we have such wonderful templates with larger numbers of photos shows that more can be done tastefully. You kind of have to decide for yourself how visible you want each photo to be and that's hard to do sometimes when you have a humongous number of photos to work with!

As I read your first post, I thought of this collection right away!

The number of photos I use on a layout depends on the topic I'm scrapping. Events usually have more photos then, say, a candid shot of my dd or a pet.
