I have figured out a few things just from reading some other people's questions... like I just learned about leading and kerning, etc. But, how do I change the shape of a text work path from the standard rectangle or square to a perfect circle? I'm sure it's something easy... Thanks in advance for the help!

Oh, I'm currently using Photoshop CS4 on my laptop...

I haven't worked that one out yet, thanks for asking. I know quite a few use CS4 and above, hopefully they will see this soon.

I am not so good at typing out the instructions for type paths as I always need to look at the directions myself.
If you are into using google... just google : photoshop+type path+circle
That should get some helpful instructions.

I think you can just use the custom shape tool and choose the path option instead of the shape layers option? Then select your text tool and hover till you get the funky little cursor and start typing away! I tried it just now and that worked for me (CS5)

Hi, Mikelle! As far as I know, you can't change a path once it's created. I didn't know about Dianne's suggestion, but I just tried it and it saves me a lot of steps. Here's what I did, in CS5:

1) choose your shape tool
2) in the tool bar there are three buttons (shape, paths, fill pixels), choose paths
3) choose your elliptical shape
4) to make a perfect circle, hold the shift key as you click and drag the mouse (don't let go of the shift key until you've released the mouse button)
5) choose you type tool
a) to write along the path, hover over the path until your mouse changes to an I-shape with a ~ through the middle
b.) to write inside of the path, hover over the inside until your mouse changes to an I-shape with () around it
6) click and type (if that doesn't work, check to see if you created a new layer to work on)

I misunderstood the question (read it wrong). But yes, Nica is right - you can just choose another shape option besides rectangle and create it from scratch. I don't know that you could change an existing shape though but it doesn't take much to create a new one.

OK, I'm stuck on step 2... I'm not seeing the three buttons anywhere on any of my toolbars - shape, paths, and fill pixels. Where are those?

Never mind, found it!!! I had the marquee tool instead of the shape tool...

OK, so I figured something more out... my husband helped me with this part. I was actually trying to get a custom shape, to fit around edges of photos and embellishments, and he showed me I can use the Pen Tool in the same way you all said to use the Shape Tool. It took a little practice for me to use that pen tool, to get the right curves, but it works!!! Thanks for your help, this is a technique I'm going to use often!

Thanks Monica for sharing these steps which I am going to print out and put in my folder on instructions that I go to when I want to do something like this and cannot remember the steps.
