Just had to share. We got DS#4's grade card today. The only thing he got an 'I' (needs improvement) in was "colors within the lines." Everything else was progressing or satisfactory. hahahaha We've had the same "problem" since the open house before school started. He was given a bear to color and cut out, in the process he cut the bear in half. The teacher was trying to be reassuring and offered to help him tape it back together. He just gave her this look like, "Why? I meant to do that," and told her, "No."

When I was in Kindergarten, my mom got called into a meeting for the same reason. I wouldn't color within the lines and I would argue about having to color objects white on white paper. Of course, I did fine on everything else. Ah, my son, I'll claim him!

Bless all those who color outside the lines!

When my little one was in kindergarten, he got an "I" for sequencing. When I asked why, his teacher laughed-- The questions were to put things in order, "Johnny wakes up, gets dressed, and then....." For Zack the universe was clearly open wide at this point, and having breakfast just wasn't the priority answer! I was quite proud of his "I" after that. ;)/>

Our thoughts and visions climb into the box all too soon--enjoy those moments of unadulterated creativity.

Great stories all and yes, me too - admire those brave enough to "color outside the lines".

Cute story Monica! I think my kindergarten teacher told my mom the same thing, only in my case I just didn't want to sit still long enough to color carefully, lol. My first grade coloring was one of my fav activities and then I stayed in the lines just fine. I love how individual kids are before they are "made" to conform!

What a cute story, Monica . . . so funny that it mirrors yours. Funny to think that "colors within the lines" is still a criteria on report cards.

Your son sounds like a creative spirit, just like Mom! Some times, you just have to color outside the lines!
