Midwest Meet-Up Fall 2013 - Kansas City

Recommended Posts

Woah! Too many things going on here to keep in the loop. Sept 29 is my mother's big 90th birthday party (at our house) and October is the big 50th anniversary (DH and mine) - at our house. I may be like a zoombie, but I'm going to make as much of the meet-up as I can. I won't be able to stay at the hotel since DGS has been promoted to JV head football coach and first assistant for varsity. That is homecoming and he has asked if we could be there - you betcha! I could drive up and catch up with you all Friday morning, then drive home and drive up again Sat morning. Sunday will depend on what you all have for a schedule. As time gets closer, maybe you could direct me where to find you and what I need to bring - ballet shoes? tiara? camo shirt and orange cap???

Just saw this - my dad would be 90 on this very day if he were still alive. Your mom and my dad have the same birthday, same year! Isn't that cool?

I just read through this entire thread - I have been so absent! It sounds like there will be some major catching up to do!

One month from today we will be having these discussions in person!!! Yaaaayyyy!! Can't wait. And just today, I started putting out reminders to the family that I will be *g*o*n*e* for two glorious days coming soon......LOL

Wow! only 4 weeks to go!!!!!! Yippee!

Yep Yep!!

So...is everyone bringing their "big gun" cameras? Or are some of you that are flying in down sizing to point and shoot or cell phones?? Just curious!

I've compiled my flight list. Looks like the Thursday bunch arrives between 1 and 5:30. The Friday bunch comes in at 2:15! :)

I will only have my point & shoot (and cell phone) with me.

Are we doing a photo walk sometime over the weekend??

Good question....if everyone wants to, we can find somewhere to go. IF Angie's boys have a game Saturday, we can all go there and take photos...hahaha....I know the boys would love the attention! ;)

Any thoughts?

I, too, have kind of lost track of this thread. I am very sorry to say that I am not going to be able to make it - again. I feel so bad that I have said I could come twice and had to flake out. The reason is we recently purchased a hot tub, mostly to help my aches and pains, and I just can't justify spending more money on a weekend away. Plus, the tub should be installed right around that time and I really want to be the first one in it! I'm sad to miss seeing you all, and meeting you Debbie, but I think it's the right thing to do.

So sorry you are not going to make it Pat. Maybe we can do the next Meet Up at your house and try out your hot tub? :)/> Sounds heavenly!

So I've had this song stuck in my head for days now. Anyone else?

(it's Wanda Jackson - Kansas City - in case the link doesn't work).

Now I have it stuck in my head...lol

Sorry you can't make it Pat!

Kansas City here I come! I had never heard that song before but sure I'll be singing it for the next month now:)

Sorry to hear you're not going to make it Pat! Not sure if it's allowed but anyone is welcome to cuddle up with me and Amy for 2 nights if that would help.

I think Pat's hot tub for the next meet up is a fabulous idea!! Pat, I hope it helps out and you feel better with it!

I'm debating over whether to bring my big camera. I'm thinking my laptop and a change of clothes or two would be plenty to carry. I love my camera though....

That song is stuck, stuck stuck. Thanks heaps Debbie! Having lived in KC for years and years, I've heard that song a time or two, or thousands. LOL

Will be bringing big camera....have grandkids to get current pics of.

Pat, just enjoy your new hot tub. You will be missed for sure though. Any chance you could meet me half-way for lunch earlier in the week?

Ok, decision making time. We are getting closer and closer (YAY!) to the meet up in KC, but got a couple of questions and options.

In the past, for the last few meet ups anyway, we've planned a little outing for some photos and fun. The Zoos in St. Louis and Omaha have been a lot of fun, but the zoo in KC is not all that great...nice but not special. A couple of years ago Angie took us to an old frontier type town....we got lots of nice photos there. Last time we went to KC we went to a shopping center...got good photos there too.

So, first question: Do you want a photo walk opportunity this year? Some of us flying in are trying to decide on which camera (big vs small) and equipment to haul onto a plane in addition to laptops. If we have photo opportunity, bring the big camera.

If we do decide, here are a few options Conda and I tossed around. Please feel free to suggest others as well. We're trying to plan a Saturday mid-morning time if we do this.

!. Park University and Parkville. Set on a bluff above the Missouri River, the old limestone buildings are extremely picturesque. Just a little distance is downtown Parkville, a very quaint picturesque town...cute shops and restaurants. Could easily start at the University, then go to the town, end up eating. This is close to our hotel, about 10-15 minutes.

2. Downtown Independence MO. About 20-30 minutes away. Another old, cute MO town, home of Harry S Truman. Many photos ops around town and some very interesting architecture, especially the spire of the Community of Christ Temple. The Truman Library, Truman home, Jackson Co. Courthouse where Truman practiced law before his political career.

3. Caroline's Country Cousins Pumpkin Patch and Corn Maze. Totally fun place this time of year. Tons of pumpkins, corn maze, lots of cute seasonal settings. It's a great place to take kids and just before Halloween there will be a lot of families there, but also plenty of good photo op stuff too. Gift shop there too. This will be a good 30 minutes away.

That's what we're considering at this time. Please help us decide what to plan for.

Oh yes! Parkville! Park College is my Alma Mater - haven't been there for 30 years. Great list - any one of them would be great.

Every time I drive by Park I think...that would be a gorgeous place for photos!!
