Lost All My Photos

Belle

Recommended Posts

Last night I could not get into my Chat so I went to update Java. I do not know if I did the wrong one but when I did a shutdown and restart, all my folders where missing. I found 4 of them in one place but all my photos and layouts are gone. I did a backup in July and I can get most of my photos from the backups and Henry's PC. The last time I did a backup of my Layouts was the beginning of July. I have lost 2 months of work. I do a layout just about every day. That's a lot of work. I lost all the layouts that I did for Janelle's matric farewell. I lost all my brushes that were in folders on the desk top. I have still got the zipped folders and can get all that back. I lost my Digi scrap temp folder and have lost my stash for about half of August. That I will have to download again. I did not lose my Scrap Girls stash, only the latest downloads. Do you think if I do. System restore I will get anything back? Will it mess up my PSE program? The worst of all, my Organiser does not work. All the thousands and thousands of files that I tagged. They are still in the organiser and tagged but the link is no longer there. Will have to delete and start over. Can you delete something that is not there? Guess what I'm doing now? Yup, backing up my stash before I start messing with anything.Wish me luck.

Firstly I feel for you Belle, and I'm so sorry this has happened.

I don't know about organiser, I've never used it but I can tell you a bit about system restore. You may get some of your files back with a system restore, but there is no guarantee you will get all or any back. However there is no harm in running it.

DH asked if you had checked your recycle bin, sometimes lost folders will appear there.

Don't forget Angie should be able to sort out most of any lost stash.

Oh my gosh, Belle. I know how you feel. I lost months of layouts, thousands of photos and lots of my SG stash. I had an offsite backup system and it took forever to get some of my stuff restored. For some reason they didn't backup all of my stuff. So now I'm back with Carbonite and they backup every day. I'm not taking any chances anymore.

I hope you can get your photos back, as I know how much they mean to you. I used a program to locate my lost files. It found most of them. However, there were no names on the files, lots were duplicates, and lots I couldn't even open. I'm still going through the restored files.

Wish you luck in getting your photos back.

Oh, Belle, this makes me a bit queasy...no fun! I have been ignoring my Java update that pops up every day. Today, I was going to do it and then changed my mind. Will have to google it and see if it's a problem for others. Glad you will get MOST of your stuff back. About 5 or 6 years ago our computer suffered a MAJOR malfunction and we lost years of photos. Ended up sending the HD to a crime lab in Tennessee and they were able to retrieve 98% of our files for a hefty fee. (You don't even want to know!) Now, I have two EHD's hooked up to my laptop that back-up every night. I'll keep my fingers crossed that your organizing system can be restored. Did you try to go back to a restore point prior to your update? That might work.

Nothing in the Recycle bin. My IT guy says that Java gives a bit of problems with Windows 8. He told me to never upgrade when they say you must. I have not checked that after all that, whether I can get into the chat. My daughter told me about the System restore. I'm just so scared to use it. I've spent all day sorting and doing backups. I would hate if it all went wrong again and I still don't get my layouts. Thanks for all the advice.

So sorry to hear this Belle. What a hassle! Have you ever used the Reconnect feature in Organizer? It is under File. Click on it and it lets you chose whether to reconnect an individual item in Organizer or all that have become un-linked. It works pretty well. If it can't fine the file, it will ask you to browse and look for it yourself. If your SG stash files are still intact, this should work. Good luck!!

The photos would not reconnect because they were gone. My stash was still there but just in a different place. I have so many goodies, it will take forever to reconnect. But thanks for this anyway.

Don't be afraid of system restore. It's a built in windows program designed for just this sort of problem, i.e. when an updated program or driver causes problems. If you are worried make sure all your irreplaceable photos, layouts, stash, etc are backed up somewhere off your computer. If you use an EHD unplug it before running system restore so you are sure what you have is protected.

This happened to me last year so I know your heartbreak! I got most of mine back by re-downloading from Angie, but never got my psd's and other items.

I found later that the things are still on the pc because it won't let me name a folder the same as it was. If you right click on a folder, and I can't remember everything about it, you will see that the folder is "READ ONLY" and if you change it to the other options, often you can see the folder. Also somewhere in windows (7 in my case) you can cllck on show all folders and some folders will come back. Ask you It guy about that since I'm so vague right now.

I had to do a partial restore to get my pc running again, but didn't do the whole restore.

Good luck!

I had a similar problem Belle when my backup failed... and somewhere along the way I had done an update for Adobe I think it was...? A bug somewhere had attached itself and HID all my files.... kinda like what Jean said. I ended up using a program called 'unhide' (I think it was called??) and it automatically went through and turned back on what was being hidden so I could see them all again... perhaps that is what happened? Karen is right - everything is there SOMEWHERE... and I have had massive issues with Reconnect as it won't do all the files and I had to do thousands manually... start like Jean said and try unhiding your files... I might be able to find what I used if you need to know, pm me :-)

Good luck x A system restore may go back to before you got this bug or whatever Java did, it is worth a try and it is reversible if no good, like Valerie said, don't be afraid of it. I have done it many times :-)
