I know your fingers are busy on the message board this week, so let's get together and jazz up our signatures! Join Conda at 9pm ET for a Siggy Challenge Crop and Chat. We'll show you how to use your digital scrapbooking supplies to create a signature, answer questions about the "rules" of using a custom signature image on the message board, and how to set it up so it shows up under your posts. We might even get a little mischievous and get....OH my!!....I've said to much. You'll just have to wait for the chat!!

Details on how to create a custom signature can be found here: How To Create A Custom Signature
We will upload our siggies in the the Mischief Week 2014 Gallery and be sure to credit the items you used and post a link back in this thread.

Make Your Own Animated Siggy!

The Scrap Girls Message Board is full of cute siggies! Have you ever wondered how you make an animated siggy? Let's jump right on in and learn how to make one!

Maxium size for a siggy on the ScrapGirls Message board is 225 x 225 pixels. I usually create mine at 1000 x 1000 pixels so it's larger and easier to work with. When I save it for the message board, I make it smaller.

Now comes the fun! Create your siggy (layout)!! I resize my papers so that the patterns are proportionately smaller and the scale fits the siggy. You can have several elements that are animated on your siggy, just make sure they each have their own layer. Really, your siggy is just a "mini layout".

Once you are finished designing, go up to your Menu bar and select Window> Animation.

The Animation window will pop up at the bottom of your Photoshop window, and you will see the first frame of your siggy. If you see bars instead, make sure to select your background or Layer 1 in your Layers Palette.

In your Layers Palette, turn off any of the layers that you don’t want to show up in the first frame by clicking on the Eye icon next to it.

Now, click on the Duplicate Selected Frames icon at the bottom of the Animation window (it looks like the create new layer icon) This will create a duplicate of the frame you just completed. Now, making sure the new frame is selected, turn off any layers you don’t want to show up in the frame and turn on all layers you want to show.

Continue duplicating frames and turning on and off layers until your frames are complete.

Next, set the animation to play continuously by selecting Forever at the bottom of the Animation window.

Next, set the frame delay for each frame. If you want a fast-blinking action, select No Delay or 0.1; for text, it’s best to set it at a longer delay, say 1.0 or 1.5, depending on the length of your text.

Now’s the fun part! Time to play the animation! Click on the Play button at the bottom of the Animation window to preview your new animated siggy. This will give you an idea if you need to adjust the Delay.

Click on Stop when you are done; the Stop command is located where the Play button was.

Now, it’s time to save your siggy! Go to the Menu bar at the top of your Photoshop window. Select File> Save for Web & Devices. A window will pop up. Make sure to select GIF and change the size at the bottom to 225 wide by 225 high. Click Save.

Next, click Preview at the bottom of the window.

Another window will pop up, and you will see a preview of your saved blinkie. That's it. Simple. Right?

I can't wait to see your creations!

I GOT MINE TO WORK!!!

Half asleep, but couldn't resist trying, I followed Andrea's directions above (written ones, not YouTube yet) and it worked!

I even got it uploaded and it was animating but going SO FAST it made me dizzy. :(

I deleted and went back to PSE and the "Save for Web" screen and yes, there is the "Delay" dropdown in the animation box next to loop.

But, it won't let me click or change and right now is at 0.2

All I know is that it was so fast it made my head spin, so I am going off to sleep, WWWAAAAaaaayyyy past my bedtime.

Anyone have any ideas? I will check in the morning.

Maybe I need to start all over since it was already saved once? Strange thing is it WILL let me click all the other buttons but not that one.

This is what it looks like. I know it looks like the numbers can be changed or the arrow clicked, but nothing happens.

I can click or change anything else, tho.

Thanks for a great chat, Conda and for all your help too Andrea! :) Night all... Zzzzzzzzzzz :bedtime:

Yippee Marilyn!!

Hmmm....Marilyn, I can't imagine why it won't let you change it. Did you try typing over it as opposed to using the arrow and drop down?

You shouldn't have to start over. It's one of those things, that when you look at it tomorrow, it will work just fine for you...you know how that is sometimes! In PS, there is a place under each frame to change the delay time.

YAY! I've made quite a few blinkies based on Syndee's great NL article, but I haven't done any siggies yet. I'll need to try it as soon as I find some time to play...

Thanks for the great info Conda and thanks for the links Andrea! :)

Can't wait to see what you come up with. Hope you find play time soon!

LOL Conda - me too!! :D

I had to search for a tutorial as my CS6 did not have animation... I had to use "timeline" to create my signature which you will find HERE in the gallery

Nope... Typing over won't work :( although it really LOOKS that way, doesn't it? That's why I included the screenshot, it's very strange...

I'm going to try again - keeping fingers crossed, thanks Conda!

PS

O-KAY!

So, now you can see my animated Siggie below and thanks to Jode you are not getting dizzy!

I could not in any way change the numbers, click on them, etc. So, I finally put in a search and first found this:

(Posting in case anyone else runs into this problem)

"PSE9-Mac: When using the "Save for Web" feature, saving an animated .gif will only save at a transition rate of .2 seconds. It will allow me to change the refresh rate, but the change won't stick on save or preview. This functionality works as it should on the PC side of the application, just not on mac."

Well, I do have a mac, but work on PSE 6 and I also know Andrea works on Mac and didn't have this trouble.

So looking further I found:

"The Frame Delay value can not be changed in Photoshop Elements 6.0. The instructions above will work to change the value, but when you save the Animated GIF file the frame delay in the file will always be the default of 0.2 seconds.

The Loop option can not be disabled. This is a known problem with the Save for Web dialog in Photoshop Elements."

So what do I do? Luckily, I'd been chatting with Jode and she had me email her the Siggie and she changed the delay time numbers for me in HER PSE 12 and sent it back! All in the span of maybe 10 minutes! Remarkable. From one half of the world to another!!! :D

So, it is thanks to Jode you are not getting dizzy when looking at my animated Siggie!

THANKS! to all - Conda, Andrea and Jode.
