BarbieK
I'm new to posting here - but not new to ScrapGirls - love to shop here!!! Now I have a problem that is bugging me: I have PSE7/Windows8 - I have noticed that when I open a scrapbook page that I previously created/saved, and I try to resize an element (.png) the background of the element goes from transparent to white? Any clue as to why this might be happening to me? The pages are not old pages, they could be one that I created just yesterday - it's frustrating. I did not have this problem in PSE5. Thanks in advance...
Smiles
Barbie, are you opening a .psd file with more than one layer, or just the .png file?

AmandaFace
Hm, can you maybe provide us with a screen shot?
BarbieK
I attached an image - not sure if I did it correctly or not. In the example, the 'tag' originally has a transparent background. after I saved the file then opened it to edit it further, the tag changes from transparent to a white square background. teecee
Hmmm, when you saved it, did you save it as a .psd file?
jode2771
I think Marilyn had this problem and we discovered it was related to being a "smart" object?? When you drag something off or move it around do you drag from the photo bin?? I think we found that if you drag from an open file rather than one sitting in the photo bin it fixes it- does that work?? Oh and welcome, good to see you come onto the forum!! MariJ
Hi there and welcome to ScrapGirls! Jode is correct, I had this problem and it was SOOooo frustrating. No matter how much I researched, I could not solve the problem. I actually started to keep layouts open forever - I was afraid to save and reopen because of the dreaded "white box". So, I know exactly what you are talking about! But, Jode was the one who figured it out for me. She's right that it has to do with the embellishment being a smart object or not, (& from what I understand, this started in PSE6 - which is what I work in). This means that if you drag an element from the bottom Project Bin up to your layout, you then need to simplify it IF you want to move it after it's been saved and reopened. To do that, I go to "Layer>Simplify". You can do it when you drop the pieces in or later when you reopen a layout and get that white box. I usually don't simplify when I make the layout now that I know how I can fix it if I have to later. So, now if you go to the embellishment that had the white box appear when you tried to resize it, click on that layer and go to Layer>Simplify and then you should be able to resize/move it without that problem. And, as Jode also indicated, if you double-click the element you want to place on your layout (to bring it to the front of your workspace) and then just drag and drop it onto the page (sorta horizontally - just slide it across and onto the layout) you won't have that problem later because it will already be simplified. I usually don't do this because it takes extra time and the element is huge when placed and then I have to resize way down. And, since now I know how to solve the white box issue later by simplifying the layer, I just wait and do it then -- if and when I ever need to. Hope that helps! I DO know how frustrating it is! Good luck and post back if you have a problem.....
teecee
Thanks for the great info, Marilyn. I'll need to keep this for future reference in case I ever run into that problem.
BarbieK
Thank you so much! I did Layer>Simplify on the layer/element and it worked! It was so frustrating to have to go search for the element and redo it whenever I made a change once a file had been saved! This is so much easier! Whew, glad it worked Barbie and believe me I understand your frustration! I went through it for years and lots of asking and searching, before it was figured out, so I'm glad I could help.
