Organizing Items In A Kit

Recommended Posts

With windows 7 the way to manually move items in a kit was taken away. I do use "sort by", but sometimes for example, a tag or element is stuck with paper or something else. I have tried to use an alphabet letter to replace a letter on the name, but most times it does not work. I have tried numbers, no luck, Is there any way to change something in the name of the element to be able to get it to line up with other like items?I hope I have explained this so it is understanbable.

I know a lot of our members use Picasa to organize their stash - I use MAC and just downloaded Picasa - have yet to work out how to use it properly. Perhaps that is the way to go for you using Windows 7?

The Scrap Girls naming convention usually has the designer's initials, the name of the kit, the type of file (i.e. paper, embellishment etc) and some identifying characteristic such as color. Looking through my stash, though, I see that not all kits follow this.

If you want to add "Emb," "paper," or "WA" to each item, that should fix your problem. Barbara has posted a couple of times about a program called Bulk Rename Utility that might speed it up for you.

There may be other solutions, but that's coming to mind. Hope this helps.

Gayle, thank you for the suggestion. When I add anything to the end of an items name, I am told if I change the extension, I won't be able to use it,so I don' add it. When I add something to the front it stays in the same place.I guess I'll just copy them and change the name there when I save it. Just not a simple way to do it.Don't know why MS took away the ability to manually do this. But thanks to all who answered my question.

You can't change the file extention, which is anything after the dot - i.e. .jpg or .png.

The trick is to change the part of the name that's going to change the alphabetical order. If you add _paper_ or _emb_ or _wa_ in between the name of the kit and whatever the description is, you should be able to fix the problem. Can you give us an example of a change that hasn't worked for you?

I'll give you an example from Kerry Veale's Victorian Garden kit. One embellishment reads KVE_VictorianGrdn_Emb_Bird.png. One paper is called KVE_VictorianGrdn_Paper_Solid_Peach.jpg. And one item of Word Art reads KVE_VictorianGrdn_WordArt_Blossoming.png. Does this make sense now?

Gayle this is the name under these journal cards. SPC_SewQuilty_JCwb.jpg and SPC_SewQuilty_JCwb-nolines.jpg. These line up just fine.

SPC_SewQuilty_JCwb-nolines.ping does not line up. It sits with buttons. I have tried numbers after the SPC and different letters at the beginning.Deleted some of the middle words and so far nothing will put it back with the others.I did copy it and got it up there, but would like to know another way (if there is one) to move items.

I move things in my kits all the time, in Windows 7. Could you be a little more specific? Are you trying to move the files in Windows Explorer, or another tool?

When you say the files or filenames "line up just fine", what do you mean?

Right-click in an "empty spot" in the folder, and select Sort By... and view the list. I'm guessing that perhaps your folder(s) are sorted by TYPE rather than by NAME. When that's the case, all the .JPG files sort alphabetically, and THEN all the .PNG files sort alphabetically. The more I think about this, the more I think that's what's occurring.

Right-click in the folder, choose, Sort By.. NAME and see if it doesn't fix things. Let us know.

Sorry for the confusion. By line up, I mean the elements are together like they should be. One after the other. I do use sort by type. I tried by name and they are really mixed up. At least by type, all the paper is together. It is the elements that become scattered.Would love to know how you move things in windows 7. I have my stash in a folder and sub folders, on my desktop. Just sort them there

.I do appreciate all the help here, and this is no big deal, I can copy any strays and move them that way. Just takes longer.

Sorting by type will separate word art and embellishments from paper, USUALLY. Some papers have irregular edges, and so are PNG files instead of JPG--JPG files have to be rectangular in shape.

The rest depends on how the artist named them. You can change the names if you like, but I only do that when I want to spell out "btn" to be "button" or something like that.

I rename many of my stash items. I like having the kit/product name BEFORE the type of material, so if the name is JCM_Paper_SummerHoliday_BluePlaid.jpg (made up name), I change it to JCM_SummerHoliday_Paper_BluePlaid.jpg, change JCM_Emb_SummerHoliday_Button_Green.png to JCM_SummerHoliday_Emb_Button_Green.png

Then I sort by name, so all the alpha components, are together, then Embellishments, Paper, and WordArt. I do not sort by type, because the PSDs (occasional) would be separated from JPGS or PNGs. Bulk Rename Utility is great for making filenames more consistently to your liking.

I wish I understood why you're having trouble moving things--I just drag them where I want and proceed. If you can continue explaining what's wrong, maybe I can figure it out.

I'm guessing you rename your items and then move them, right? Even when I put in a different name or alpha letter, they automatically move alphabetically.. If I rename and then use sort by name, they won't move automatically? I can't seem to get rid of them moving automatically. I never get a chance to move them manually. Hope this is not confusing

Are you trying to move things within a folder? I think Barb is talking about moving from one folder to another. Within a folder, you have limited options for moving things around - e.g. by name or by type.

By the way, in windows 7, you can add tags to the properties of a file. This is helpful for doing a search.
