MariJ
After a short hiatus, the Art Journaling Chat is BACK and we can't wait to start creating and discussing pages again! Are you interested in learning about digital Art Journaling or wondering what it's all about? Excited about the layouts you've already created and anxious to make more? Join Marilyn (MariJ) and Jody (Jode2771) in the chat room on Monday, September 15th at 9 pm ET for an Art Journaling Chat and Challenge. We will discuss and review the basics of Art Journaling and provide a prompt to start your layout. Come join the fun, talk about ideas and try an Art Journaling page, it's always a lot of fun! PLEASE NOTE: We are conscious that ScrapGirls live in all parts of the globe, so our aim is to alternate months and times. So while this is an evening ET chat, (therefore morning for some members) next month we will schedule an early ET Chat in order to make it easier for other time zones. Jode and I will post our layouts right before the chat and update this thread afterwards with the Art Journaling prompt along with any tips or points we discussed. Come join the fun and talk about ideas and Art Journaling! Sure hope to see you there. Here's my layout Marilyn's Page and Jody's Page Chat UPDATE: During the chat, we discussed "basics" of Art Journaling and how it is like keeping a written journal except it's made of art not words. We suggest that Art Journaling pages be photoless and use symbols along with words or phrases to express your thoughts. For example, you could use a cartoon little girl to represent yourself or heart to show love or maybe even a vivid, busy background to show excitement! You can use journaling, word art or even "hide" your journaling if it's too personal. And, since your these symbols and words are personal to YOU, "anything goes"! NOTHING is ever "wrong". We also talked about finding it difficult to work without rules and ways to help that, for instance just piling things on a page and then playing with them.. Or, using one collection and talking pieces from it. For more examples, check out Gayle's (Smiles) Art Journaling Compilation where she shows us that Art Journaling can be "simple" and created in smaller & less intimidating sizes. She even explains her philosophy in the last one. Thanks Gayle! This month's layout PROMPT is: "Artistic Freedom" What does freedom mean to you, as an artist? To start, journal or think about "Artistic Freedom and find paper(s) to use as background. You can crop or turn the pieces. Type or place your words/journaling if you have some on your background and add symbols and words. When you are finished, please post your layout in the Art Journaling Chat and Challenge Gallery for all of us to share. We can't wait to see what you create. Have fun and feel free to post any questions here in the thread or PM Marilyn or Jode!

Nica
Okay, it's not the blendy/messy style I usually associate with art journalling, I just can't seem to pull that off, but here's mine: 2014-09 Good Book. I looked more at the freedom an artist provides us (in this case authors and their books).

MariJ
Life is a Circle Question: My layouts look ok on my pc but online they either look dull, dark, or not clear. Any suggestions? Hi Jean I commented on your page before seeing this and I think it's beautiful! I didn't notice and dullness or darkness - your colors of course are on the darker spectrum as opposed to pastels, but they are lovely and perfect for your page. As for clearness - totally clear to me!
