Digital Scrapbooking W/ Pse Tutorial Question/problem

Okay, so I followed several suggestions from my last question & bought the Digital Scrapbooking w/ PSE video class from the boutique so I could more easily learn PSE 13 (since I barely knew PSE 8 and had upgraded) and they were right...I love the class & have learned things I wasn't taught in the 8 hour community college class I took on PSE. That said, I'm doing the 3rd sample page and have a problem that I hope someone can help me with...I have a PNG template that has 4 frames (side-by-side & slightly overlapping) & have drug 4 photos into place, however, when I am on the photo layer, using either the marquee or elliptical marquee to select the area showing in the neighboring frame and then hit either backspace or delete I get the error message "Could not complete your request because the smart object is not directly editable." So, to simplify (I think), the photos are behind the template layer, using the marquee/elliptical tool I select the part of a photo overlapping into a neighboring frame and then hit delete & get the error message. I have the doc saved as a PSD but can't figure out what the heck I'm doing wrong that I can't get this to work...any ideas?

Thanks.

Lol, apparently the photos are smarter than me because I have no idea what that even means...?! I didn't do anything special to them, just opened them from My Photos. I did also recently upgrade to Windows 8.1 so if you know of a setting I need to change within it to keep this from happening every time, please, let me know.

I don't have PSE, so I'm not 100% on this. But when I drag an image to my new document in Photoshop, it automatically comes in as a smart object. In certain cases, this is fine. But most of the time, I right click on the photo layer and select "Rasterize layer" from the pop-up menu. I'm not sure if it's the same in PSE, but there should be a similar command to rasterize the layer. Here's a little background explanation on smart objects:

With Smart Objects, you can:

Perform nondestructive transforms. You can scale, rotate, skew, distort, perspective transform, or warp a layer without losing original image data or quality because the transforms don’t affect the original data.

  • Work with vector data, such as vector artwork from Illustrator, that otherwise would be rasterized in Photoshop.

  • Perform nondestructive filtering. You can edit filters applied to Smart Objects at any time.

  • Edit one Smart Object and automatically update all its linked instances.

  • Apply a layer mask that’s either linked or unlinked to the Smart Object layer.

  • Try various designs with low-resolution placeholder images that you later replace with final versions.

  • You can’t perform operations that alter pixel data—such as painting, dodging, burning, or cloning—directly to a Smart Object layer, unless it is first converted into a regular layer, which will be rasterized. To perform operations that alter pixel data, you can edit the contents of a Smart Object, clone a new layer above the Smart Object layer, edit duplicates of the Smart Object, or create a new layer.

I think simplify is the PSE version of rasterize....hope it works! There may be a setting in your preferences set to bring in photos as smart objects. I don't use PSE, but I'm pretty sure there is a setting in the full photoshop.

Eureka! Simplifying worked! I will definitely be making a note of that in the class notes. I still don't understand it all, but I'm okay with that (mostly because doing it "right" repeatedly but not having it work has exceeded my frustration quota for the day - and the kids aren't even home from school yet - yikes!) THANK YOU so much...without you, I probably would have just avoided similar templates in the future. Now, on to the next tutorial...grayscale templates. (But at least I've not had a problem with clipping masks before so I'm hopeful these go well. Haha!)

Thanks again!

Cathy

Oh boy I learned something new today too. I use 12 so I am sure simplify is the same in this version. Thanks for that lesson.

Stick around, Boatlady...I seem to have a knack for accidentally finding the complicated way to do the simple things. LOL! I've not used the forum much but I can see I'm going to have to make it part of my daily routine so maybe I can learn from others BEFORE I run across a problem/situation...not my usual M.O. but what a concept! Haha! Very thankful to have such a useful tool & so many helpful & knowledgeable people willing to help us newbie's. :)
