E-Reader Recommendations Please

I adore my e-reader! To me, the most important thing is that the make and model is compatible for downloading e-books from the library. I borrow e-books all the time (my local library has a fantastic selection) and they automatically expire after 3 weeks. No having to make trips to the brick and mortar library to return books!

The other thing that is important to me is battery life. I prefer the "e-ink" readers with a battery that can last up to a month. The e-readers with a color screen are really more of a multi-function tablet so their batteries need to be charged daily.

I've got a Kindle and loved it right up to the moment I bought an iPad mini. I love the iPad because when I read I like to have a dictionary and encyclopaedia beside me to chase down curious side alleys of thought that the book Im reading has generated. An iPad does all that and more.

Hi Cindy,

I LOVE my kindle and in fact have two! I first got the Kindle Fire HD and it's so cool because it has internet access, a kindle reader, games, apps and email. It's like having a small tablet, but cheaper than an iPad. I can even Skyppe on it, watch Netflix and save photos. I hear that the the new Kindle Fire even has a camera. The reader is shiny like a computer screen, so it's backlit and easy to read, but not outside because of reflection.

The kindle e-reader (the original) one is small, easy to carry and easy to upload books to. I borrow library ebooks too! It reads easily outside, but to read in the dark you need a light. It was $49 last christmas so I got one as a gift!

It's easy to buy kindle books through Amazon and lots of free ones too. I really enjoy both of them.

I have just been giving a Kindle paperwhite for Christmas and I am loving it.

I was struggling reading since losing the sight of my right eye and reading was problematic.

I am reading too much again :D, I was never going to give up my books.

I used to love doing research on books and bestsellers but with Kindle it just drops right in there, even get a chance to read free books before they are released.

Love it love it love it.Downloading a book is too easy, freebies, samples ...

I started out with a Kindle, but moved up to an iPad a couple of years ago. The iPad screen is just a little larger and easier to read. You can also download books from anywhere, Amazon, Barnes and Noble (Nook), library and any other source. Plus you have the additional features of a tablet. I also like that you turn the pages by swiping, not clicking a button. You'll love whatever you get. Do check out your library's collection of e-books.

I have two Nooks. One is the earlier 'color' Nook and then I also have the Nook HD+with WiFi capability. It has a larger screen and has more capabilities than the earlier Nook. I love both my Nooks. When is low on battery, I have the other one to use while its being charged.

LOVE love my Kindle Paperwhite!! It's my second Kindle. I prefer reading on my "real" Kindle over my tablet. I think it is easier to see/read than reading on the tablet. I check books out from my library to read. LOVE! With the Paperwhite, it's touchscreen, no buttons to click.

I've got a Kindle but prefer reading on my tablet. I have a Kindle app as well as lots of others on my tablet. I also prefer not having the light on to read at night. I don't know if the newer Kindles are backlit or not. Henry has to leave the light on at night when he reads his Kindle.

Several years ago I received a nook and liked it, but they are always improving. This year I asked for either a new nook or kindle leaving it up to my hubby to research because that is what he loves to do. He ended up getting me a tablet and I LOVE it. I can d/l books for both nook and kindle plus a whole lot more.

As far as I know, ereader Kindles are not backlit but they are the easiest to read in daylight. But, you can use a booklight with them just like any "real" book". You can buy any clip light to attach on top of the kindle - some cases even come with them built right in and it uses the Kindle battery. I actually bought an inexpensive clip-on light in a dollar store (imagine!) that I use with my Kindle if reading in the dark. Otherwise, that's when I switch to the backlit Kindle Fire. :)

I have an IPad and I just love reading on it - it took me a long time to get used to it because I love the feel of a real book, but honestly I find it cheaper to download the e-books and like Conda, I like swiping to turn the pages rather than clicking on a button. Plus I can do so many other things on my IPad -

I DO read on my tablet while walking on the treadmill. I realized that as I hopped on it this morning. The configuration of my tablet and case along with the "dashboard" of my treadmill works beautifully.

I was just given an older Kindle and I love it...so many books in such a small unit. It will be great for the boat this summer....no books kicking around the spare cabin...DH is going to love that.

I have a Nook and loved it until I got my IPad. Now I much prefer reading on my IPad. My Nook isn't backlit, and I love that I can read on the IPad in bed with the light off, and just let it turn itself off if I fall asleep. I love checking out the e-books from the library. Isn't technology wonderful!

I have a Nook HD+, and love it! Great screen resolution and reading font choices plus color (I use sepia most of the time.) I read library books on it all the time, using OverDrive application.

The only problem is that it's also a tablet, and I can let myself get distracted with so much else. :D

Kindles here and the new paperwhite has a backlit screen. I prefer a nice light kindle in bed, in case I fall asleep and drop it on my face. Don't laugh, it happened. I have 3 kindles, one older reader, one of the newer ones and a fire. As someone said, it's great to always have one charged and ready to read. I use the fire alot for games and occasionally for note-taking or if I get a book with pictures.

The library option is also a great one - if I see a book I'd like that is expensive, I always check to see if my library has it.

Any ereader would be great for minimizing clutter and to always have a book on hand - they fit easily into a purse, backpack or briefcase.

I have a Kindle Voyage, but I only use that at home. When I travel (Sun - Thu) I read on the plane using the Kindle app on my iPhone - that way I only have one device to worry about. The other thing I love is that I can have a Kindle app on all of my PCs (Windows Laptop, Surface Tablet, MacBook Air) and access to my work or pleasure books from pretty much any device.

The other thing that's cool is that when you buy a Kindle book, you can buy the Audible version of that book at a discount and listen to the book if you're not in a position to read. When your device syncs, you can pick up reading where Audible left off and vice versa. Due to the extra expense, I only do this for books for work, not pleasure books.

I'm a non kindle fan. I had a sony ereader for several years and now have a Kobo, which is great (I also have a samsung tablet but read books on my kobo or my android phone). One of the features I love about my Kobo Aura is it is compatible with Pocket so I can save webpages on my computer and they are downloaded to my Kobo for offline reading.

When deciding think about what you expect to read as that will narrow down your choices, for example if you want to read

  • pdfs with graphics you probably want a tablet type as graphics are not always pretty on black and white eink
  • library books avoid kindles and check the service offered by your local library. I believe most libraries use Overdrive so you want to be compatible with that
  • ebooks you already own, check the type as there are incompatibilities between devices so you can't open epub books on kindle and you can't open kindle files on other ebook readers (unless it is tablet type that you can add apps)
  • outside an eink version is better than tablet type as there is less glare

I believe Amazon offers the cheapest devices, greatest choice and in general the lowest prices. But I still recommend people avoid the kindles because they use their own file format that is not compatible with other devices so Amazon are locking you in to their products in the future; however I know that other people are often not as paranoid as me about things like that.

If you are buying ebooks this is a great website for comparing prices https://luzme.com/. You create your wishlist and say which stores you want it to search and then it shows you the prices at each store. It will also send you an email to let you know if the price drops below a trigger price you set.

I have a Kindle Basic, been using for 2 years and loving it. Glare-free, e-ink, and no eye strain like when reading on an iPad. Will upgrade to something that has built-in light though, like a Paperwhite or Voyage, because I read in the dark quite often recently. I’ve written an article analysing the functions and features of various ereaders here, maybe you can take a look before deciding which one best suits your needs?

I gave my Kindle to my dad, but I have the app on my computer and phone. I do most of my reading on my iPhone, occasionally read to the kiddos in my life on my computer. My niece's Rosie loves my touch screen on my computer and enjoys turning the pages.
