Png To Psd Files

There was an article in the newsletter some time ago with directions as to how to create a clipping mask to png files that were frames. I can't seem to locate that article in the archives. Does anyone know where it is?

Thanks for your help!

While I am not familiar with the specific article you mentioned, to "clip" one layer (a photo, gradient, fill, etc.) to another in Photoshop:
Place the layer you would like to clip above the layer of the mask and making sure the top layer is active, use keyboard shortcut CNTRL+ALT+G.

In PSE, the procedure is the same, but the shortcut is CNTRL+G.

If you are clipping to something that has texture and you want the texture to "show" on the clipped layer, do the steps above and then with the top layer active, scroll through your blend modes (Overlay or Soft Light are usually the most common, but the other options can provide interesting results, too) and adjust the opacity of the top layer until you get the desired effect.

Hope this helps!

I guess I didn't express what I was looking for very well. A while back the newsletter had an article on adapting png frames by using the magic wand in the center area of the frame where the photo would go, modifying that by expanding the selection slightly and then going through some additional steps. I can't remember what those steps were. The end result is that the png file was modified to include a layer where you could clip a photo to it. Does that make sense to anyone? I think Monica may have written the tutorial???

OH! OK...haven't seen that tutorial, but here's how I'd do it:
Use the magic wand tool (with contiguous checked) to select the center of the frame.

You will get marching ants. Go to Select>Modify>Expand and select maybe 2 or three pixels.

Make sure you create a new layer and fill the marching ants shape with a solid color and place that layer under your frame layer.

Clip your photo to that shape and adjust the photo's size (CNTRL+T and hold the SHIFT key down while you make it larger or smaller) and it will fit perfectly in the frame.
