Change The Thumbnail For Psd's?

Just wondering...is it possible to change the thumbnail picture that shows up in my Windows 8.1 folder for my PSE 13 documents? I'd love to see an image of the document vs. the generic PSE thumbnail but I didn't see anything in the "Save As" dialog box & am always nervous to poke around the "Preferences" without clear direction so I don't accidentally change something else. I'm really hoping to hear "Yes you can!" and "Here's how..." ;)

Thanks!

You'll need to install a codec that will allow Windows to display the PSD thumbnail. Adobe doesn't provide one, but if you search you'll find some people have success with a couple of paid 3rd party programs. The reviews on free versions are mixed.

Preset Viewer Argus by Tuma Soft is what I use. It is fairly inexpensive and shows PSDs, abr, asl, csh. pat and grd files in the open window. It is integrated so once installed it just shows the various files in your open window, just like a jpg. If you open the windows pane view and highlight the file it shows the individual files in any of the aforementioned formats, except it doesn't show individual layers for PSDs. I wouldn't be without it anymore!

Oh wow, that Preset Viewer Argus looks A-mazing! I had no idea something like that even existed?! I checked it out, it looks great but I have one (okay, two) quick question(s)...it looks like from their "sample" before & after, do your brush sets appear in a sort of "stack" and can you still just drag them onto your layout to just temporarily use them?

Thank you both for your help. I l-o-v-e asking questions on this forum! :)

Wow, nevermind...Google is a wonderful thing & I just watched a video of how Argus works. Downloading this will be first on my to-do list tomorrow (definitely ahead of shoveling the drive...again!) I am so geeked...what a wonderful thing! Thanks so much for sharing.

I also use Preset Viewer Argus, and love it. My favourite bit is that I don't have to keep preview images of psd files anymore. Every little bit of space saved is worth it for me.

I have emailed them & asked specifically about PSE 13 and Windows 8.1 and will let you know what they say. It LOOKS like it should work (from other sites I checked out - sorry, can't remember what they were) but ten bucks is ten bucks so I wanted to make sure. Will post their answer if they mention PSE 12. :)

Thanks. I emailed them too. Will see what they say.

My understanding is that this is some kind of Windows interface and doesn't have anything to do with which version of Photoshop you are using. It's all about the file format no matter where it comes from. I have Windows 7 and have used PSE 9, 10, 12 and CS 6 files.

I can confirm that it works in Windows 8.1. And it should work with any version of PSE, like scrapgarden says it works with file types not the program. I use it with the latest version of PS CC.

Too impatient to wait for their (Tumasoft's) reply after so many positive replies here and yes, it worked for me. It is incredible! How is this not mentioned on any of the video tutorials?! What a shame for everyone to NOT know about this. Well worth $10! I can't imagine ever being without it already. Just gave myself my next snow-day project...going through and deleting all my preview brush/etc. images. :)

I know, right?! What ELSE is out there that I don't know I "need" yet? Haha!

Do you know about Nesus Font? Another program I would not be without. Before you open Photoshop or PSE you open Nexus Font and just let it stay minimized. Then when you open Photoshop you have access to all the fonts on your computer, installed or not!! How cool is that. I have spent hours trying to find a font that I used on a LO and the font is no longer installed. Best of all it is free unless you wish to donate something. I hope I haven't broken any rules by posting the link: http://www.xiles.net/

No, I don't have Nexus Font installed but was just reading about it under the Tutorials tab. Sounds very cool, indeed! I've collected dozens of fonts over the years but never have done anything with them except to put them in a subfolder within my Scrapbooking folder...does Nexus Font find all your fonts no matter where they are on your computer or do you still have to have them in one centralized place (like wherever the regular Windows fonts are?)

I am very excited about the Preset Viewer Argus, but I have written to Tumasoft:

I just purchased your previewer product after a recommendation on the Scrap Girls message board, http://scrapgirls.net/forum/.

It seems to work well with .ASL, .ABR, .ACO and .CSH files.

For PSDs, it’s very inconsistent. All in this first group have been saved after resizing to 8.5 x11 with PS CS4, on a Windows 7, 64 bit computer. It also applies to 12x12s as received from the artist, created in CS 5.1. When I look at a folder, I see something like this:

post-17172-0-76214000-1425142698_thumb.p

I cannot read the black box message.

The size of the file does not seem to matter, nor the save date. In the case of the specific files above, all were originally created in PS CS 5.1, per the file info details, then re-saved in PS CS4. I could copy the file info/XML code and send it if it would be helpful.

Some small image files I’ve created (for icons) in PS CS4 preview, others do not preview at all.

Please let me know what I might do to remedy this. Thanks!

Here's hoping! Does anyone else here have this difficulty with PSDs?

Hurray! I have an answer. Oh, drat, I have an answer.

Let me explain. John Tuma answered my email suggesting that perhaps "File Compatibility" (Edit, Preferences, File Handling, "Maximize PSD and PSB File Compatibility" was not on when the problematic PSDs were saved. So, I checked. Mine was set to Never, and I switched it to Always. (Note: I had read that this would make files larger.) Resaving did NOT do the trick. Doing SAVE AS and overwriting the old file FIXES the missing preview. Hurray!

I created a tiny action to do this, and set it up to do a folder's worth of files in "Before", under File, Automate. That is way less tedious than doing them one at a time. There a few downsides: 1) The new copy loses the old "created" and "modified" dates, and takes the date/time that's now. No big deal, except it's kind of nice to know when you actually created a file. 2) The files are indeed larger. 40 PSDs, totaling 2.61 GB before this transformation are now 3.35 GB. That's an approximately 30% increase in size. That's the Oh, drat.

That said, I LOVE having working previews on my PSDs, and all the other Photoshop file formats for shapes, brushes, etc, already worked fine. I hope this is helpful to others.

Very cool info, thanks for sharing! I've printed it & will make sure my settings are set this way to avoid having the same problem in the future. As for making files bigger...I guess a 2TB EHD is going to fill up a little faster now, but oh well! The convenience of the previews WAY beats the ol' generic thumbnails so it's a trade I'm willing to make too.

Again, thanks for following up...I appreciate it (and I'm sure others will too!)
