Png Turns To Jpg?

I'm not sure how to explain this, so I'll give you a specific. I think it must be PSE13 problem. I am using the yellow duck png in TSC Loving Baby Girl. When I put in on the layout it was fine. Later when I tried to reduce it's size, a white box jumped around it. This has happened several times to me lately...never before PSE 13. I have found that I can delete it, after simplifying the object... but it is extra steps and annoying. Also am upset with having to simplify everything before making changes. Any one have answers besides ditching 13?

I'm still using PSE12. I tried PSE13 with the free trial, and didn't like it. Too many changes that I didn't like and no way to change them. So, unfortunately I can't help you. I'm sure someone will be along who knows PSE13 and will be able to help.

Not sure if this will help but this happens to me in PSE6 if I close a layout and then put it back in PSE - whenever I try to resize and element, I get the white box around it. You are right that simplifying works, but ti's an extra step. The other thing that works for me is when I am adding an element to my layout, I can not take it from the little project bin below and put it on the page. I have to put the element next to the layout and slide it across and onto the page. Then there is no white box.

Does that make sense? I have no explanation, but it works for me..

It's very late for me now, I will check tomorrow to see if it does or helps. Good luck.

I've had this happen a few times already. I don't know why. I think maybe you did File>Place?? I just drag and drop my items and don't put them directly onto my work space. I can't actually remember how I fixed it. Sorry no help but I do know what you mean. I use PSE13 with windows.

Hi Lou Ann,

I don't have PSE 13, but here's some information I read that may be of some help:

If you drag up from the photo bin, PSE 13 makes the new layer a smart object, but you keep the file name in the layers panel.

If you use the move tool to drag the element/photo to your layout (so you have to allow floating windows, and have your layout and element/photo side-by-side), then you do not get a smart object, but you also do NOT get the file name in the layers panel.

If you use File->Place to bring in an element/photo, you do NOT get a smart object, but you DO get the file name in the layers panel.

So, Theresa has said in a much better way what I was trying to last night!
That is what I mean, Lou Ann.

From my experience the "white box symdrome) has to do with whether you drag up from the photo bin onto your layout or not.

When I do drag up in PSE 6 I get the white box.

If I move the photo from next to the layout directly onto it (with both windows side by side) - then I don't get the white box.

Theresa is correct that the layer then does not have the file name - they are just numbered layer 1, layer 2, etc. Sometimes I put it in myself, most times it doesn't really matter.

I get your frustration - this drove me crazy for a LONG time. Hope this all helps.

The File> Place command adds a file as a Smart Object to your document. Smart Objects can be scaled, positioned, skewed, rotated, or warped without degrading the image.

While this is a good thing, users have experienced transparent backgrounds turning opaque. This isn't supposed to happen, but sometimes the complexity of the project i.e. many layers and many blends/filters, mess up the program's ability to keep the transparency for a Smart Object. This explains why simplifying layers prevented the transparency from becoming opaque.

If this problem happens a lot for you, I guess avoidance is the best workaround. No smart objects! i.e. Create a new layer by dragging between two floating windows.

Linda, you are the best, I always learn so much information from you!

I have learned to do as you said - creating new layers by dragging between two floating layers --- but I never understood why.

Now I do, thank you. :)

Thanks, Marilyn! I was watching a video that demonstrated how a non-smart object began to pixelate after a few transformations. So if anyone notices that a graphic appears blurry, it could be due to several re-sizing tweaks. This doesn't happen with Smart Objects. He called it non-destructive editing.

Well, now see? Here again, I always wondered why have those pesky smart objects and you have explained it even further, thanks again, that's actually very interesting and something to remember as I've been known to tweak and tweak and tweak... And, then tweak yet again. So, smart objects would come in handy there!

Thanks, Gayle. A drastic resizing of a graphic using the corner handles, can really pixelate a graphic. To avoid that, I use the editing dialog box where you type in the new dimensions. Then I add it to my project. I wouldn't have to do this if I used Smart Objects more often, but I do find that my "old" way helps keep my project file size very manageable.
