Anyone Using Indesign Now?

I see the last question in the forum related to InDesign was in 2012, I'm wondering if anyone is currently using it to create their scrapbooks? I've started learning it and it seems like the application best suited to creating books, even those that are all about the photos. I'm wondering if there are loads of people using it but just not posting about it, or if no one is using it. If not, I wonder why not? It is costly, and I am finding it does have quite a substantial learning curve. But for making books it looks like it would be easier than anything else once you knew how to use it.

Anyone out there scrapping with it?

Adobe InDesign is a page layout program for creating business documents such as tri-fold brochures, booklets, sheets of Avery labels, etc. It is not a good program for creating art because it doesn't have masks, styles, blend modes, brushes - the features you find in Photo Shop.

Typically, you would design your graphics in Photo Shop and then bring them into InDesign to produce your catalogue, as an example.

InDesign is great for producing photobooks because you can easily add, resize and position multiple photos (as well as background papers and embellishments) on multiple pages. However, you can't use it for advanced photo-editing (i.e. blends, masks, brushes, etc.)

Hi Lisalynn, I use InDesign frequently as I produce a 32-40 pg monthly newsmagazine which is printed at a commercial print facility. It's an amazing program for print output or e-publishing. For scrapbooking, if I want my title to look especially sharp or I have a lot of text journaling, I will do that portion in InDesign, but usually do all photo manipulation in PS. For multi page output such as a PDF that can be viewed online, I will set up the job in InDesign and pull in my PS layouts or photos. InDesign does support layers and blend modes and you can have effects such as shadows, gradients, feathering. It handles bending text to fit shapes easily.

Thanks so much all of you, you have confirmed the initial impression I have been getting as I go through the initial tutorials. I have Lightroom and Photoshop to do the photos and create any artwork but I like the idea of making my books more book-like, as now I plan to print them as books using a service. I'm glad to know that some of you are using InDesign already as I work on learning it!

Have fun with InDesign. Sounds like you are off to a good start. Feel free to PM with questions. Keeping your end result in mind, you may also want to narrow down where the final printing will be done. If you want very high quality output on an offset press, your printer most likely will have specs that they will provide you which is helpful when you set up your job. Become familiar with terms such as bleed and trim.

Blurb has an InDesign template for creating photobooks which have the bleed and trim lines.

I'm more familiar with Illustrator, so when I want to do cool titles I go there and copy it into my layout as a smart object. Perhaps I should look into InDesign for better text in Photoshop. Kind of excited to hear that you do that Tina.

Thanks so much all of you. I'm not sure who I'm going to use for book printing but I will look at that Blurb template. I want to create my books so that they would comply with most printers' requirements for that size so I don't have to commit in advance.

April. Illustrator is a vector based program, not pixels like Photoshop, so your text will be the best in there. If you are using InDesign for your layout there is no need to use Illustrator for your text and import. You will save time and multiple files adding your text straight inside InDesign. LisaLynn, as April mentioned, Blurb has a plugin for InDesign making setting up documents to the exact size with bleed etc easy. Tina I like your workflow :)
