Boatlady
I want to put the rule thirds gridelines on my workspace but I cannot seem to make them. I found a tutorial, followed it but they do not appear. . It seems so stupid that I cannot do it but I am so frustrated now, I am using PSE12 so if someone could help I would really appreciate it
Nica
Hi Debby! I don't know about PSE but in Photoshop if you press control semicolon that will toggle the guides on and off.
Boatlady
Thanks tried that but they are not even there to toggle on or off. I cannot get them to show up at all.
Florida granny
In PSE 11, which I think works the same way as PSE12, go to Edit > Preferences > Guides and Gridlines. A dialog box will open. In the Grid box, go to "Gridline every" and choose 33.333 and choose "percent" from the drop down arrow. Choose "1" for the subdivisions and click "OK". Then on your workspace (layout) go to View > Grid and you will see your layout divided into thirds. The beauty of choosing a percent is that no matter what size photo or item you have on your workspace, it will be divided into thirds. Let me know if you have questions and I'll send you screen shots.
teecee
I use Diane's method a lot in PSE 11. Another thing you could do is use a custom shape. There is a grid shape near the bottom of the custom shapes list. You can select the shape and choose fixed size, and put 12 inches in the width box and 12 inches in the height box (or other dimensions for other size documents) and check the box for From center. Then click once on your document and you will have your grid. You can then get the move tool and drag it into position. Let us know if you need more help. englishrose
The custom shape Rule of Thirds grid works very well especially if you are cropping photos.
Nica
Interesting! I never thought of the custom shapes way. Another idea, for those that use PS, there's a free add-on called GuideGuide. I use it all the time, but I don't think there's a PSE version...

lindarobin
Hi, Boatlady, The part that you are missing is mentioned by Diane. Not only do you define your grid from the Edit menu, you must also turn the grid on from the View menu.
alsoarty
You can also drag your guidelines in from the rulers to the 4" - 8" points up and down. That's my quick way.
Boatlady
Diane is right all I had to do was go to edit and check it. Thanks so much ladies. I knew I was missing something pretty simple. Nica
I'm pretty sure that you can turn both sets of grids on at the same time....
