Ashamed To Admit This

Recommended Posts

I have been here for quite awhile, and I have never figured out how to make Actions work! Well, MRE_CornerRounders does, but I just stopped trying after awhile. When I first came here, I had wanted to digiscrap for so long, that I went a little crazy and bought a lot of things I have never used - over time, thanks to people on this site, I did figure a lot out. I asked some questions early on about the different actions, but I guess I just gave up. So - new free ScrapbookGirls booklet - tried...Not. Can anyone tell me how to figure it out? I figure they are in there PSC6 because they are listed under actions, but I tried a couple today and ..not. Thanks. Guess I should have asked years ago but I just come and go.

First, which actions are you working with?

In CS6, double clicking on an action will install it.

Some actions do have patterns or brushes that make them able to get the desired results.

Most of them really are as simple as clicking the Play button. I have a few that are hard to use, but most of them are pretty easy.

I love actions, but I too have had problems with a few that I purchased. I use MRE Corner Rounder a lot. Works perfectly and I love it. I need to install my other actions since I got my new computer. Forgot about them. I think that we could use a class on 'Actions'.

I agree! Well, I have a quite a few actions that I never used because I just gave up and had already purchased them. I remember asking questions about COL_StitchedHoles, and despite the helpful answers, it never worked. Just recently I tried to use BMU_Sketch and BMU_MegaLift (which I swear I did get to work once)..not. When I go to the Actions window, I hit the arrow button to select that Action, right. But the "Play" button doesn't light up. I am in PSCS6 and do quite well with it in other aspects.

Perhaps you are trying to run the action on a layer that is a smart object.

If the layer has the smart object icon in the lower right corner (like in the image below), you'll usually need to rasterize the layer before you can run an action on it.

You can click on that image to make it larger.

Sorry April, but I have never converted anything into a Smart Object. I learned Photoshop vis my son, great on-course, and a few years of swest and tears (I did sort of learn how "rasterize" might help), but believe me, these are just plain layers. I thought I didn't know how to run the layers, but after looking at the booklet?

PS6 creates smart objects when you drag items from windows explorer into your layout, so you wouldn't need to create them. At least you know that isn't the problem.

If your layer is linked to another layer, it can hang up the action.

Some actions will work on a layer within a layout, others won't and need to have the item open separately. Many come with a tip sheet.

I wrote one one of the actions tutorials that is in the new handbook using CS6, so it should work the same way.

Make sure you have the correct layer selected. .

The actions will have more than one in a set, so if it won't let you play it, click on the arrow to the left and it will show the individual actions within the set. For instance the mega-lift action will have many options: Bottom, Bottom Left-Top Right, Bottom Right- Top Left, Top & Bottom, Left & Right Sides, Bottom Left Corner, Top Left Corner, Bottom Right Corner, and Top Right Corner. Click on the one in the list you would like to use. It will be highlighted. When you've selected an action within the set, the play button should be available.

Thanks April. Unfortunately I am working out of town so won't be able to try anything for over a week. I use a a Mac, and am sure I have only the layer selected. I did save the "instructions" that came with my purchases but never know where to find what I am looking for. My biggest problem was not pursuing how to work these actions at the time of purchase. It has been a while now. I just stopped purchasing actions :(
