Tagging Pictures On My Nikon Coolpix S4300 With Star Ratings & Pse13 Tags

Sorry for the long title of this post, but didn't know how else to say it any shorter.

I'm working on getting all my digital pictures organized in the PSE13 Organizer. This works with "Tags" and makes pictures easier to find.

My Nikon Coolpix s4300 camera will let me put star ratings on any pictures I have on it. I've done that with some pics that I had not downloaded

off the camera. When I did, I didn't see the star tags on those pics in PSE13.

Not sure if PSE13 recognizes Nikons' tags or if the star ratings that Nikon does actually are in the metadata of the pic.
Is starring the pics while on the Nikon camera and then having them recognized in PSE13 even possible?

Would be REALLY cool if it is!

Anyone know?

So sorry, Marti I am working on PSE6 still on a Mac and have a Canon camera so I'm no help. :(

But, that would be a very cool feature if it worked!

Did you try to do a search asking that question or maybe Nikon or Adobe Help? I'm just not sure how helpful either one is. ;)

Based on what I've been able to google and find on-line (which we all know depends on how you phrase your search), it doesn't look like PSE recognizes any tags (stars) I put on photos while they are in my Nikon. I also tried it with some pics that I still had on my camera and then uploaded them to my computer and then imported into PSE. Did not see any star tags in the metadata or anywhere else and PSE didn't show that the pics had any type of tags. So for the time being I'm just going to have to be disciplined and tag my photos as I import them into PSE. House Keeping Chores! ugh! LOL!

Started trying to organize my photos in PSE13 this week.

Oh boy!

I have these Main Category Tags: Keywords, People, Places & Events. These 4 Main Categories came with the program, I didn't make them
and didn't bother to delete them.

The People, Places & Events I believe are like the ones across the top of the Organizer window. Not sure what that does or means, yet.

I made a couple of sub-categories for the 4 main categories, but I'm finding that I'm making and putting more sub-categories under the Keyword Category and not using the other 3.
For example, under the Keyword Category, I have Vacation/Day_Trips, then I have sub-categories under that, one for Hawaii and another one for New Zealand and another one from our fall camping trip. There's more, but you get the idea.

Another sub-category of Keywords is Time, with sub-categories for each month (01 January, 02 February, etc) and another sub-category of Year

for each year (2007, 2008, 2009, etc).

The People Tags I have sub-categories for each surname, then each of those have sub-categories with the individual's name. I do genealogy and set this one up like my research files.

Now I'm going in and tagging photos. For example, I have a group of photos from our New Zealand trip. I high light those photos and then drag the tags for Vacation/Day Trip, New Zealand, Time, 07 July, 2007.
That's 5 tags and I haven't even tagged the ones with the people yet. Those will end up with at least 7 tags b/c of their surname and given name (2 tags).

This has me wondering, how many tags do you all typically have on a photo?

I realize some photos may end up with just one or two tags and others will have many more, but wonder if I'm being too crazy with this?

It does not matter how many tags you have on a photo. I use organiser to sort my stash and I use lots of tags on one item. I might have it tagged as Favourite, grunge, pink, cluster etc. it just makes what you are looking for easier to find. I love my organiser.

Thanks Belle!
That's what I keep telling myself, it will make what you're looking for easier to find.
I haven't even started organizing my scrapbook stuff yet; just trying to tame the photo mess I have going on!
Which brings up another question I have.

I'm reading "Photoshop Elements, Basics and Beyond", by Patty Debowski and she talks about catalogs.
PSE13 comes with one and it's what all your photos and anything else you import into usually goes to. Patty

mentions that she's made two catalogs one for her photos and a separate one for all her scrapbook stuff.

I guess she feels it's easier and faster to sort through the separate catalogs rather than one big catalog.

Have you done this?

I have a catolag for photos, one for Digi and one for layouts, although the layout one is really not neccesary.

.

Hmmm, I'll have to think about this.

I've gone through ALL my media and tagged anything with family just with the Family Tag. I figure then I can click on the Family Tag and get the binoculars then that will bring up ONLY the media with people in them. I'll then go through and tag with the family name. The third pass will be for each specific family and tagging with given name. At least I think that will be the easiest way, to just keep making more and more specific passes.

It sounds worse than it was. I'm now in the process of tagging individuals; "Family" & Surname tags are done. I've also been throwing in Year and Month and State and Town and Address tags periodically. That will take care of my more recent photos. Then I need to start importing my backups of older stuff (and this is where I REALLY start feeling overwhelmed, b/c those photos are everywhere, dvds, jumpdrives, external hard drives). I also want to make sure they are all backed up, then tag them, then back EVERYTHING up again.
I was reading in my Patty Debowski book that you can imbed all your tags so that they are part of the metadata. That means once they're tagged I won't have to do this again. Even if I change what I use as tags, I have enough tags on most of the photos (4 or more going from the most general all the way down to fairly specific).
I KNOW I'm over tagging, but that's ok for right now. Until I know how I'll use the tags (which ones) that's what I feel I have to do. In the meantime I'm having fun and learning stuff!
