All around the world, there are traditions for honoring a person’s ancestors. This weekend, we’re celebrating the Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) with our neighbors south of the border. In Mexico, it is a national holiday that “focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died, and help support their spiritual journey.” (Day of the Dead - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

This weekend’s challenge is to do a heritage layout to honor your ancestor(s). You can do a traditional heritage layout, or if you are feeling adventuresome, try incorporating some of the Dia de los Muertos' colors, images, and meanings.

Here are some ideas to get you going:

Alter Decorations: Candles, buckets of flowers (especially marigolds), cocks’ combs, mounds of fruit, lots of food, bottles of soda, hot cocoa, water, toys, and candies for little ones, cigarettes and shots of alcoholic drinks for adults, folk art skeletons and sugar skulls (History of Day of the Dead & the Mexican Sugar Skull Tradition).

Colors and their meanings: Traditional Colors for the Day of the Dead (with Pictures) | eHow

When you’re finished, post your layout in the Weekend Challenge Gallery!

I'm working on a layout to honor my grandfather. I'll post it as soon as I finish it. Emotionally, it's a bit more difficult than I expected, but I will get it done! I hope you'll get your done as well! **hugs**
