Pse 10

I use PSE 10 and I really want to use pre-made photomasks and clipping masks. I cannot figure out how to get the mask and photo to merge to create the clipping mask. What am I doing wrong. What I did was to place the mask into photoshop elements. I see the created layer in the layers panel. When I add the actual photo which is larger then the mask it conceals the mask. I then hold down control and G to clip the mask but nothing happens. What step have I missed. It is so frustrating. Someone help please.

Hi Carol,

First, are you sure the photo is on the layer directly above the mask layer?

Then, when you press CTRL+G, are you holding down the CTRL key when you press G?

Maybe someone else will come along with some other ideas for you.

I'm pretty sure you have to have your mouse pointer on the line between the photo and the mask....it will change from a pointer to something that looks like a half circle when you are in the correct spot....or you could go up into the layers menu(I think) and click on Create Clipping Mask- that's how I do it in PSE 11.

Okay, I will now give you the exact steps I have taken to use the mask.

1. I turn on pse10 and there appears to be the main blank view screen.

2. I add my mask and it appears on the view screen and a small version of mask below it. The mask also appears in the layers panel on the right. There is a small eye icon and the words layer 0.

3. I then add my photo by using the menu file open and choose the photo. The photo is opened and it covers the mask in the view screen and a copy of the photo below it. The photo also now covers the layer o on the layers panel on right. It now says background. To me it looks merged as one.

4. At this point I go back to the main view screen and hold control and G to clip but nothing happens.

5. I even try to use the menu to create clipping mask but no luck.

6. There is no line between the mask and photo on layer panel because it automatically seemed to merge when I first added the photo.

I obviously made a few mistakes somewhere...lol. Help.

HI Carol,

I follow you here but I'm not really sure that you are adding the photo to the same layout as the mask?

For what I know, you need to directly put it on the mask - either by dragging it from below the workspace and dropping it onto the photo above, or clicking on it in the workspace and moving it over/dropping it onto the photo.

Then in your layers panel on the right you should see two layers -

background (mask) on the bottom and

layer 1 (photo) directly on top of it.

Does that make sense? I don't always know the correct terms for things.

Keep asking and we'll keep trying to help - we'll get it right yet!

I just took a screenshot of what it looks like in my program. I'm working in PSE 13 on a Mac, but maybe you can see how in the layers panel on the right, the photo is above the mask and the arrow shows it has been clipped.

Remember you have to directly place the photo onto the mask -- not just into PSE.

After you've clipped the photo to the mask, click on the photo and hold the left mouse button down while you move the mouse. (It's just like clicking and dragging something.) You should see the photo move around behind the mask so you can position it. Hope this makes sense. :)

Hi Carol,

I just thought of something else - are you sure the move tool is active when you try to click and drag? It won't work if the move tool isn't the active tool.

Anyway, we'll mess with it some more tomorrow. :)

hi Teecee and Marj,

Just would like to say thank you for all your help with the masks. I finally got everything to work out right. I also know where I went wrong. The problem was that I did not add the photo from the work bin....rather I used the photo that was initially on the large view screen when it was opened. Anyway, when I dropped the photo from the small work bin to the mask on the large view screen, it finally worked. Since that time, I have completed several masks. I am confident now rather then frustrated. Again, thanks so much for your help.

Yay! I'm glad you got it to work, Carol! I do that all the time - even when I know I'm not supposed to!

Happy that you got it straightened out and can't wait to see what you create.

And as Theresa said - never hesitate to ask, there's always someone around to help. :)

Hi Carol, can you tell us what mask you are working with?

I'm not sure, but I would guess that the masks don't remain colored bcause once you clip, you are actually covering over the mask so it won't show anyore.

Most of the SS masks are black or shades of grey. I get confused when they are shown as colors and don't like them that way. If you want the colors to show through you might have to apply a blending mode to the top layer.

Someone else will come along with better info, I'm sure.

Hmmm, as Marilyn (MariJ) mentioned, when you clip a photo to a mask, there won't be any color showing because the photo has covered the mask.

I can't recall ever seeing any masks in colors other than black or shades of grey like these masks:
