Scrapbooking 101 - Back To Basics

Recommended Posts

It's time to kick off the new year by going back to the basics of scrapbooking! Join us on Scrap Girls Forum for "Scrapbooking 101". This challenge focuses on taking time to scrapbook regularly. When the month is over you'll have completed four layouts and hopefully had some fun along the way.

A Welcoming Committee Member will post a task each Monday through Saturday from January 1-30. The tasks will be formatted in a LARGE PURPLE FONT for ease of locating them in the game thread as it grows. Some tasks will require message board participation or gallery posting. You will also be given some “homework” to complete!

Those who complete and upload all four layouts by 11:59 pm (ET) January 31st will be entered in a drawing to win one of two $10 Gift Certificates to the Scrap Girls Boutique! Each person who completes a layout will be entered – once for each completed challenge page - into a drawing for one of three $3 gift certificates.

Here are a couple of tutorials to help you post links and images in this thread.

How To Post Links In The Forum

Some days we will ask you to post an image of your layout in this thread. Here is how;

  1. Make sure you save your layout as a PSD/layered file first.
  2. Save your layout as a .JPEG at 72ppi with a size of 4 x 4 inches (288 x 288 pixels) this is smaller than you would normally save for the web.
  3. Follow the first part of this tutorial by Carla How To Post Images In The Forum to post your "progress" in the game thread.

Jan 1st

For these first two days we will gather some basic supplies to create our four layouts.

Imagine that you can only have four collections. Just four. For today’s homework I want you to search the boutique for four collections.

Post in this thread what four collections you would get and why?

Please note; you do not have to use these collections to create your layouts.

This was hard but I have chosen;

Endless Possibilities Collection Biggie - I use this collection all the time, great for boys and girls.

Boy Oh Boy Collection Biggie - for boy colours and layouts

Shabby Blanc Collection Biggie - got to have a neutral collection

Stories We Tell Collection Biggie - love the soft colours, great for more feminine layouts

Only 4 gasp! Full disclosure- I would have to have the Value Packs- not just the Collections ;)

World's Best Dad Collection Biggie- Despite it's name, this collection is surprisingly versatile with lots of flowers and neutral colors, as well as some masculine embellies

Nassau Collection - Because a beachy/nautical collection is a must in my life!

Loving Lavender Collection Biggie - I just love this collection, no idea why, it's not what I would call my "style" but it's got great word art and the colors work together beautifully

Simple Joys Collection Biggie - One of my favorite club selections from last year!

This does sound like fun - and a great prompt to get more scrapping done. Haven't accomplished much in the last month. I'll give this a try, but I will be flying to Canada on January 29, so probably won't be able to finish all tasks on time.

I searched in my wish list, and found six of many that I'd like to have - and USE. My favorite four of those:

My-Merry-Wish-Collection-Mini-2.html - I can't seem to have enough Christmas collections, even though I don't make many Christmas pages;

Derby-Collection-Biggie.html - I have several years of David's pinewood derby photos, never scrapped; this might prompt me to use those photos;

By-Any-Other-Name-Page-Kit.html - it's beautiful, and lends itself to nature photos - flowers, gardens, spring, maybe fall, and to feminine heritage pages - versatility!

Feeling-Good-Collection-Biggie.html - bright, happy, lives up to its name; I can see applying it to all sorts of pages.

Eeek, only 4?! You're killing me here.

Scrap Girls Day by Day Collection Useful for all sorts of photos

Chambray Collection Biggie I adore the colors, patterns and textures in this one

Take Wing Collection Biggie Ditto above - I've used this collection on several pages already

Wesley's Christmas Collection Biggie I Loooooove the blue in this kit. We seem to have a lot of blue around at Christmas, whether it's in a few decorations or our clothes, I find it works well with our Christmas pics.

Is it sad that even 4 layouts in 1 month sound like too much for me?? *sigh*

It sounds like too much for me too, Theresa. I think I'll have fun trying though. :)

It wasn't easy to pick only four, but here are the ones I chose:

Autumn Splendor Collection - I love the colors and lots of great word art

My Floral Fantasy Collection Mini - I love how it's so soft and feminine .

DoodleMeDo Collection - Great b&w with a gorgeous splash or red. Wonderful zentangle elements.

I Am Collection Mini - Pretty blues and wonderful blended, grungy papers

Jan. 1st.

I love these monthly games that we create layouts in. My life has been so busy lately, but when it is one of the monthly games, I manage to keep up somehow. This was not an easy decision to make, but I finally chose four collections:

Harvest Spice Collection - I love the colors in this one.

Antiquities Collection - The embellishments in this collection just look inspiring.

Family Ties Collection - This looks like one that could inspire lots of great family layouts.

Hello Baby Collection - I am expecting my first great-granddaughter in February, and this should be very useful.

I'm excited to get started with this! Sounds like fun!

Here is my homework:

Seize the Day Collection Biggie

I love the green and blue in this collection and it's perfect for nature.

Stories We Tell Collection Biggie

I love the colors for photos of my dd and for art journaling!

First and Goal Collection

Although this is geared towards football, I find myself using the papers from this collection for everything!!

Main St USA Collection Biggie

Being a military family and living so close to D.C., this is a must for me!

For homework, that wasn't too bad...limiting it to 4 was the hard part!

I've got lots to do today, so I am posting nice and early.

Jan 2nd

We can’t create layouts without photos! Well we could, but this month we want all your layouts to contain photos.

For today’s homework I want you to search for four sets of photos. One set for each layout we will create this month. You can use any number of photos on your layouts but think carefully about what you choose. What you pick today you must use, in any order, this month.

Post in this thread the subject matter of each set of photos you will use.

There will be no task tomorrow, Carla will be here on Monday as we start our first layout.

My four sets of photos are;

  1. Ben's school photo.
  2. Kiahna posing in new clothes.
  3. Kiahna when she lost her first tooth.
  4. Some photos of Lauren playing cricket.

Here are my choices:

1. The girls baking Christmas cookies

2. Buddy opening Christmas presents

3. Our trip to Ft. McHenry

4. Dora playing with string

All are from December 2015, so I'll have a good deal of the month scrapped in January, yay!

I'll be back Monday with the first task for the week!

Going Buggy Collection Biggie: This is one of my favorites for summer layouts. I love the colors

Camping Out Collection: another favorite for our outdoor activies

Outdoor Life collection Biggie: This one would be good for everyday layouts along with the others.
