Pse 14 Re-Sizing Lo For Good Resolution ?

I need to re-size LOs from 300 - 3600X3600 down to 72 - 1000X1000 and have it under 250K and save as a jpeg. Some LOs will come up with poor resolution [down around 3-4 on the scale] when I try to get it to 250K or below. I flatten all my clusters so no extra layers there... and same for masks. I have simplified all the layers and deleted unused layers and even flattened the whole LO by dragging it from the photo bin into a new blank layer. Then I go to resize - image size and set the document size resolution to 72 then change the pixel dimensions to 1000 X 1000. and do a save as jpeg... the slider come up to show the size...and I move it down to where it is less than 250K. That is when it ends up with poor resolution.

Any tips or suggestions about how to get good resolution at that size??

  1. Flatten the entire LO
  2. Change image size to 1000 x 1000 pixels. Do not change dpi. You have already lowered the resolution significantly from 3600 to 1000.
  3. Save for the Web
  4. Choose JPG format and quality to "50"

I did this to a 3600x3600 JPG (over 10 MB) and my resulting 1000x1000 JPG was 234 KB. It still looked very good on the computer screen. Of course, the resolution was not high enough for print quality.

Don't overwrite your layered PSD with this low resolution version!

I save the image as a jpg (10 on quality is usually sufficient). That flattens the layers for me and I don't risk losing the layers in my original file. Then I open the jpg file and resize it. I change the resolution to 72 first, then change the pixel size (1000 for this, 600 for our gallery). When I save the resized image, I add the pixel width to the file name. Make sure you check the preview box in the jpeg options window. This will show the file size as you move the quality slider.

Like Linda said, this is for web viewing, not for print.
