Guest Sharebear57
Ok... I hope I don't lose power before I can finish this... I have a Compaq Presario laptop and it won't read the power cord anymore. Even when it is plugged in, it runs on the battery. For a few days now, I have been able to jiggle the cord and hold it a certain way to get power long enough to charge the battery, but as soon as I let go, it goes back to using the battery. Today, no amount of jiggling and arranging will get it to see the cord. It is only going on battery power and that power is almost gone. I had a compaq a few years ago and the same thing happened. After the battery was totally drained, I guess we took to long too have it fixed and that somehow resulted in a motherboard failure and the complete loss of the entire computer and everything on it. It was devastating!! Has this happened to anyone else, and does anyone know what I can do? I am down to less than 30% power remaining.... Please Help!!! momentousangel
Sherri, the same thing happened to a neighbors laptop, they ended up having to get a new power cord for it.
Durin
Bless your heart! I hope, like Valerie's neighbor, it's just in need of a new power cord.
Guest Sharebear57
Well, it turns out it's the connection and to fix it, they have to take apart the entire laptop and it is going to be very expensive. I had to go 2 days with no computer, but today, my dh was nice enough to hook up the desktop computer in the bedroom for me. I am so happy to have the internet (and ScrapGirls) again, but it's very awkward trying to use a desktop computer in bed! Hopefully we will be able to get the lap[top fixed soon. (I am so thankful that I backed up all my files the day before the laptop broke, so I can still have access to my stuff!)
Durin
At least it wasn't your only computer and you can still scrap and hang out here. I hope it's fixed soon!
Leigh Ann
this happened to my mother in law's laptop, and the problem was that a coworker had rolled her office chair over the power cord and messed it up. we ordered a new cord, but now it won't charge the battery... Haven't figured that out yet. So there's a perfectly good laptop here besides that you are always tethered with it. Computers are great... when they work... DDecker
Sherri, do you have a cordless keyboard and mouse? They are pretty inexpensive these days and would make the time that you have to use the desktop easier. btw.......why are you confined to bed? Please don't answer if this is too nosy a question. Guest Sharebear57
Lol.. The reason I am stuck in the bedroom is that we don't have heat in any other room right now. We don't have a central heating system in our house (we use a woodburning stove), and when my dh was putting the plastic over the windows to help stop drafts, he discovered mold on the wall behind the sofa. And so, (in the typical male fashion) he immediately ripped out the entire wall. So, now, not only do I not have plastic on the windows, I also have no wall on half of my living room! (sigh). So, i am confined to the bedroom (where we have a propane heater) until he can get it fixed. In the mean time, it is FREEZING in our house! We have to bundle up just to go to the bathroom. When I went out into the kitchen to grab some lunch this afternoon, the water in the dog's dish was frozen solid! (don't worry...he has food and water in the bedroom, too)
DDecker
Oh man! And I thought that my house was bad! LOL We have no heat downstairs and no insulation either. It is all underconstruction! At least we have heat upstairs as well as the office, bedroom and kitchen. We do keep it cool as there are a bunch of walls with little to no insulation on this floor as well. Our bedroom is the only current room untouched by the mess! At least the dogs water doesn't freeze! Good luck getting it all fixed soon! And I am glad that you are well, I was worried something was wrong!
Guest Sharebear57
lol...well, it's nice to know I am not the only one freezing my butt off this winter! Thanks for your concern, Dee.
Guest sfcgijill
Grin- I so feel for you! My computer is downstairs in the basement (aka "TheHole"), and we don't have heat down here. Today, dh bought two little space heaters, one for each of our desks. Our cat's bed is down here too, and he'll only sleep there while we're down here too! Guest Happy99
Here is a tiny thought that might help you out. Do you live near a college or high school? Could you call the school's computer dept, or library and ask if anyone has the same type of computer and would they let you recharge your computer for an hour or so using their cord? I know I would be willing to do it for you if I had a Compact Laptop. It's the holidays and you sound like your in a middle of a crisis. I hope everything turns out ok for you. I don't know a lot about laptops, would an hour help?
Guest nlwilkins
I had this happen to my laptop and I found out the same thing you did - they have to take the whole thing apart to fix it. Sooo....now I have a new computer. Its not a laptop, but I did not want another one if it was going to be the only computer I had. The laptop was kinda old and needed replacing anyway,it was purchased in 2002. Sorry about all the cold. That must be a bummer!!!
