I have never submitted any work to be published before, but I thought I might start since this is a new year.
Anyway, as I read through the different magazine's page calls, I notice that a lot of them have calls for similar things. What I am wondering is if it is ok to submit the same page to several different page calls at once. Is that ok, or is it considered bad etiquette?
If it is ok, what happens if two magazines choose the same page? Do you choose one or do they both just publish it?
If anyone knows the answers to these questions, or has any other tips or advice for someone first starting to submit work, it would be really appreciated. Thanks!

Sherri,
I think standard practice is to submit the same layout to as many calls as possible. Meaning, one submission per magazine. Don't submit the same page to CK's Wedding call AND CK's Vacation call at the same time, even if your page might match both categories. Just choose the best call from each magazine to submit your page to.
The only time you would NOT submit the same page to more than one call is if the submission guidelines specifically say NOT to. This may sometimes be the case for special calls, or some of the bigger contests. But, for standard or open calls, submit away!
Then, if two magazines both want your page, standard etiquette will usually dictate that you go with the "first come, first served" philosophy. You can tell the second caller that the layout was unexpectedly (!) already picked for publication by a different magazine.
Finally, if you've already submitted a page and have not gotten a request for it and you see a magazine call that matches that page, go ahead and resubmit your page. It can't hurt to get your page back in their sights. Many pages have been picked for publication this way. And even though magazines say that they keep submissions on file for future use (and sometimes WILL use them), they often don't have the time or inclination to sort through backlogs of submissions when so many fresh, new ones are right in front of their noses.
Best of luck!

Yep, you can submit the same page to a bunch of different mags...and basically, it's first come first served. So, whoever calls you first, gets it. Then if others want it, you just tell them that it's already spoken for.
Good luck!
