Sketchbook Layout Templates?

Mindy

Recommended Posts

Speaking of questions - could someone talk me through how to use Thao's beautiful Sketchbook templates? They are absolutely gorgeous, but I'm just not getting it. For instance, there's the layer where the picture goes - the picture area is black with brushstrokes around it. Do I just use the black area as a guide where to put the picture? If so, the brushstrokes from that layer don't show. Also, on which layer do I put my background paper? On my new document? I've used other templates without a problem, but I must be brain dead today! TIA!

That would be wonderful! Sorry I forgot to say that before - I have PSE 3.

Thao, I have to say - you do absolutely gorgeous work! I'm always in awe by the beautiful things that all of the designers come up with here.

Hi Mindy, to use the black photo template you need to perform a "clipping mask." I don't have PSE 3 but I think it's the same function as in PSC2.

- With the black photo template file open, drag your photo onto it. Place the photo above the black area.
- In your layers palette, click on the template's layer and click CTRL+G to make a clipping mask. The photo should now be "merged" onto the black template and the brush strokes should show through the photo.

Let me know if this part works. I'll walk you through the next step!

Great, Mindy! :) Next, move the brushstrokes templates into already opened photo layer. Do you know how to apply a Color Overlay (under Blend Modes) to a layer? Right-click on the layer with the bruckstrokes that you want to play with. There should be a "Blending options" or "blend modes" option. Select Color Overlay from the next window. You can adjust the color, opacity, etc. to match your layout. I hope this makes sense.

I have an uninstalled copy of Photoshop Elements 4. I'll install it so I can see if what I'm telling you is applicable in PSE. ;)

At any time, you can place a patterned background or solid color underneath your photo.

I finally got back to working on this layout. Thanks for the directions. It was easy once you explained it. I had a blast playing around with the blending modes. I wanted to make a fun layout for my 16 yo dd and her 17 yo cousin. Hopefully, I have achieved that! :dancingelephant:
