I wasn't able to make either of Jan's recent blending modes classes... AAAARRRRGH! But that never stops me from playing around on my own. I've actually been using blending modes for a while. Well, tonight, I made this pretty paper, and then decided to start playing around. I wasn't trying to make anything, I was just seeing what would happen. I applied a gradient overlay in diamond shape and then changed it's blending mode to hard mix. I was immediately struck by the fact that it appeared my paper was disintegrating and revealing that it was a cover over a very brightly lit hole/tunnel/other world. Take your pick. It just blows my mind how convincing it is. Blending modes can do some amazing things. I'd love to see some things that you all have created by accident. Even if you would never scrap with it, it's still fun to share. :D

Awesome job Jo. I made an accident once with the blending/gradient tool. It is this layout.... In My Daughter's Eyes, I was messing around and came up with what I saw as an eye. Hence I did I layout using that "eye".

You guys created really beautiful things by accident! I think it's way cool how many things can be done with these programs and you just proved it again!

To have a friend is to have a shoulder to cry on, a hand to hold and an extra pair of legs when yours are too weak to stand alone...

I have been living buried in books and writing classes... as an added note I must say that it is rather scary when you start dreaming and all you can see within your dreams is words floating everywhere!

I love using blending modes with my text. No examples, though, because I keep getting an error message when I try to upload images to my gallery... :(

I made this paper from 1 ss texture template (BVA Child Described) and three ss paper templates (TCS Hanna). I had so much fun!!! I am so ready for spring, I can't wait to get a photo of Madison in her Easter dress to use with this.

Blending modes can be used on photos, too. I like to make a duplicate layer of the photo, set the duplicate (on top) to about 50% opacity, then play around with the modes. Overlay tends to make the colors pop a little more, and sometimes I can get really cool light effects from color burn or hard light. I play around with the opacity level, too (but 50% is a good starting point). It depends on the photo - some photos don't change all that much, some change lots. :)

Scott Kelby Photoshop Books have some great "receipes" for photos using blending modes and gaussian blurs for fixing photos, just reading this last night!

Isn't this one of the main reasons we are so addicted to this hobby, because it is just so fun playing and experimenting. It really appeals to the creative side of myself that I never knew was there until I had to learn Photoshop for scrapping.

I love his books-someone very wise here recomended them (sorry, I don't remember who), and they are fabulous! He has one for digital photography, and a couple for PS nad PSE. They are fabulous!!!! If you ever wondered how to fix your photos, I would highly recomend them. And, they are very readable. It's pretty rare that authors of books like that show their sense of humor, but his make me laugh. LOL-DH thinks I'm crazy, reading a book about PSE and chuckling to myself.....

Anna's right, his books are really funny. I like the way he's personable and really relates to the reader, kind of like you're having a conversation with him instead of reading through some big, technical manual. I have both his CS2 for Digital Photographers book and his CS2 Killer Tips book. They're both really great, I would recommend them to anyone wanting to learn more about Photoshop, not just for digital scrapbooking, but for other things as well.

Ditto here as well for Scot Kelby's books. I love reading the beginning of his chapters just for the funny side of things but he explains things so well with such easy step by step instructions.
