Walmart and Office Max often put their Western Digital externals on sale for a great price. Watch their ads. We have 6 WD's now, betweeen personal and business use and we have never had a problem with any of them.

I have had problems with TWO Western Digital EHDs. I think I've figured it out - the ones I've had problems with are the ones that are 120 gig and up... UNLESS the drive has a separate power source. If it does, that seems to be fine. I know of a few people who have also had EHDs that crashed. I think it has to do with not getting enough power. And yes, my laptop and desktop are both plugged in while using the drives. So, I'd just be careful. A 500 gig drive surely would have it's own AC adapter, I would think...

WD is the ones my dh prefers too, I will be looking for one next week when my laptop arrives!
