How Do These Specs Look For New Laptop?

Recommended Posts

I've decided to get an HP Pavillion dv6000t Notebook. Here are the specs I was going to get. I run PSE 5, so I would like it to be really fast for that. TIA for any input!

– Intel® Core 2 Duo T5600(1.83GHz/2MB L2Cache)

– 15.4" WXGA BrightView Widescreen (1280x800)

– Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 950 - Core

– HP Imprint Finish + Microphone

– 1GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)

– 60GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive

– DVD/CD-RW Combo Drive

– 802.11b/g WLAN

– No TV Tuner w/remote control

– 12 Cell Lithium Ion Battery

I'm no expert, but recently purchased a new desktop system. I've heard that Windows Vista Home Basic isn't very good. If you can, go with Home Premium. The rest looks pretty good. You can probably get by with the 1 G of RAM but 2 would be better for using a graphics program like PSE.

Heres one thing about a laptop, they are either impossible to upgrade, or extremely expensive. Id max out your RAM, the most they can install. Your processor should be perfectly fine. And if your using your ehd, take the free upgrade. Also, if your buying from hp direct, see if they will bundle in either pscs or psp as part of the package. Might save you quite a bit, and if you dont have a recent version, you will! LOL

Hope that helps

Just got my new laptop a couple months ago -similar specs as the HP you're looking at (I got Toshiba)

Definitely do the 2G RAM instead of 1G- I use PSCS, and will be upgrading to 2G myself. Can be slowish otherwise, esp if you use the pretty graphics that are there for Vista (I use the old style graphics- uses less memory, and I don't care if the file icons are pretty!) If it weren't for the fact I can buy the memory on eBay or at the PX for fairly cheap, I'd have been a little upset, as to upgrade mine from 2 512 modules (1G total) to 2 1G modules would run me $400 if I bought from Toshiba direct. Plus, I already knew this when I bought my laptop, and had prepared for it, and the fact that my laptop cost a few hundred less (got it at the PX) than it would have otherwise, it made up for it.

I didn't go for the TV tuner either- that's what the TV is for! I'll never miss it, as I can't watch TV on the laptop and scrap at the same time.

I did get a 17" widescreen, because that is what the special purchase offered- might have gotten a 15" or maybe even a 13" otherwise to make it a little lighter and more portable because I do travel extensively with it. If you are going to travel, I suggest getting the car plug-in for it. The new screens are so much easier to see, but they do use battery.

All my previous computers- four desktops and one laptop- have all been HP, and I have never ever had even one hardware problem with any of them.

Hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mine!

I have a similar machine except I run XP and only a 1.7GHz processor and 1 gig of Ram and I find that I can run PSE5 without any problems at all, so I'm sure yours will be fine.

I have Dell with the same HD and Ram as Rachael. I have been scrapping for a year and keep everything over a month old on an EHD and have almost as much HD as I did when I bought it. I run PSE5 and it runs great. You should be fine even if you upgrade to PSCS. If I were buying one today I would get what you have decided on simply because I may one day want to upgrade.
